amoxicillin clavulanate - or other antibiotics
    #2064968 - 11/02/03 02:55 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering if Augmentin or another antibiotic could be dissolved and then sprayed onto the mycelium or mushroom to prevent diseases - would it work, or just end up killing the shroom too?

It would depend on how much, but that'll only prevent bacterial contamination....

Even at lower temp than 37'c and with fairly specific substrate, is that a good idea? Breeding bacteria that resist amoxicillin?

Stamets reccomends 0.1 gram of gentamycin sulphate per litre of agar media to help fight bacterial contamination. I only use this recipie when I am cloning mushrooms from the wild. It is not a very nice substance to work with, and is quite expensive, but it usually decreases the bacterial contamination rate substantially (although my clones off of dung usually contam quickly). I don't worry about breeding resistant strains, cos if something contams, I kill it and throw it away, but if a culture survives, I get it onto non-antibiotic media asap.
I've tried all kinds of H2O2/antibiotic mixes for wild clonings, but have no clear-cut winning formula to report. Also from personal experience I think you'd be surprised how many little bugs from the depths of the rainforest are already resistant to the latest antibiotics !

Isnt amoxicillin clavulanate a antibiotic for human treatment?

Yeah -- and it's not good to be eating it (like if you're spraying it on your mushrooms) if you don't need it. An antibiotic is an antibiotic, though. The only real difference is the preperation -- a lot of antibiotics aren't soluble in water.

The reason gentamycin is good is because you can autoclave (or pressure cook it) -- I think it's the only antibiotic like that (or at least the only one I've used.)

Anno showed the there are some benefits of using Penicillin and Streptomycin in agar even if they're not supposed to be autoclavable.

however, ofcourse antibiotics have little affect on mold contaminants - they only lesson the chances of bacteria contaminants, which can usually be isolated out of the picture anyway.

Its easier to isolate away from bacteria when you're streaking spores then when you're trying to clone. Most of my failed cloning attempts failed because of bacteria that encircled the mushroom tissue. However peroxide is quite efficient in that case.

I wonder if i can add amoxicillin to cooling agar mixes, as its a lot
cheaper and easyer for me o get hold of than gentamycin.
Does anyone know if its water soluble, or what temps break it down?
As i need an antibac for starting wild prints  and already have
amoxicillin.
