I have a question that I asked in cultivation, but no answer so i though advanced mycology would be a better place to ask.
I have some Gentamycin Sulfate Antibiotic Powder and I wonder how to use it and how it work. how does it affect bacteria and not myc? and also is it exclusive to agar or i can use it elsewhere?? like LCs?? thanks

Along with your questions I would like to ask if one could use penicillin in place of Gentamycin. It is autoclavable and i have access to it

Penicillin won't stand up to autoclaving. This is why we use gent sulfate. For the answers to how antibiotics work, I'd suggest relevant medical/biology sites. RR

Gentamycin is one of a class of antibiotics known as Aminoglycosides. They act by binding to a specific site on bacterial ribosomes (the piece of cellular machinery that constructs proteins). It blocks the ribosomes from working, so no protein gets made, and the bacterial cell dies. It is somewhat broad spectrum, but definitely works better on gram negatives. Gram positive bacteria have a thicker cell wall that the molecule has trouble getting through. Penicillin, by comparison, acts almost exclusively on gram positives.
Bacterial ribosomes are different from eukaryotic ribosomes in several ways, and as such, Gentamycin simply cant bind to them. That said, gent. sulfate is relatively toxic to humans, so you should be careful when working with it. Wash your hands, dont breath in the powder, etc.

Theoretcally it could be used for either but make sure it's just to clone/inocuate and much doesn't get into anything to be consumed. If I recall correctly it can cause severe ear problems which is why it's used as a "last-resort" antibiotic for people.

Yep, In the inner ear and Kidneys it has a tendency to treat cells mitochondria as bacteria, and well, kill them. Tends to be rather unpleasant.
Thats actually why its available as easily as it is. Since we cant use it in humans, its fine for veterinary (IE aquarium) use. Of course it can still lead to cross-mechanism resistance in other human drugs, but still, better than nothing.

I thought it was used in humans but only as a last resort when all else fails.
That's just from memory. I could be wrong.

Wouldnt surprise me. They'll try just about everything when you hit last resort territory. I know they use it occasionally for intentionally damaging the inner ear in people who have serious balance-nausea issues, but thats a pretty rare occasion.
