I'd try leaving the lids on but loosening them up to allow for some airflow.

sparkey screwed up too(was impatient)he used the 1/2 pt (jelly jars)he removed tape from inoc. holes after a week and flips jars daily (noticed big growth increase ever since)he doesn't know if he's letting oxy. in or gas build-up out...........his are almost 85-90% colinized and reaching for the top/bottom as he writes...........t.c.'s were his choice so he was in for the long wait (not as bad as he heard).......bout 15-16 days so far.............he's planning on laying his cakes on their side for more surface area (he had a dream) I'd like to see more about jar size etc.........

sparkey used 1/2 pt "jelly jars" and is about 85-90% colinized..........he flips the jars every other day.........he thinks the biggest problem was not being able to reach down far enough when inoculating........is he letting oxy. in or gas build-up out................he doesn't know! but since he's been flipping he noticed a big difference!

on the laying the cakes on their sides issue, yes, it works well. i've been doing it about a year now. i add a tablespoon or 2 of vermiculite to the bottom of my jars before filling with substrate so that the bottom casing is colonized before birthing.
i then lay the cakes on their side in a little cradle made of foil.
they pinand flush from both ends at once.
pretty awesome.
try it, you'll like it.
