    #2019868 - 10/18/03 05:44 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hey anyone here in washington state been out picking in the enumclaw fields? There's a hell of a lot of fucking cow pastures out there and I was woundering if anyone has had some luck out there... I drove around the area today but I only had about an hour or two to kill and couldn't find any place I could park that wouldn't be obvious... anyway anyone been out there? Is it worth the effort?

You park and then you walk a few miles. Shit. I use to hitchhile from Eugene every day 16 miles to Noti, Oregon on the highway towards Florence. There I would pick liberty caps. I collected and carried them in 1-gallon wax milk carrton so people who drove by years ago thought that i was getting night crawlers fromthe pastures to go fishing or that I was coming from the country store with a gallon a milk when i would hitch hike home.

That was in 1973 when I first discovered the liberty caps by misidentifying them from a picture of P. pelliculosa from Alexander H. Smith's Field Guide to Western Mushrooms.

I thought they were one species when they were really another species.

Backpacks are highly convenient..especially ones with more than one compartment so that you can pull something like a bottle of water out if you are recieving funny looks...

Empty gas can. Then if they see your car you just ran out of gas. Put the shrooms in the can.

I live out here in yon boonies, and have sadly had zero luck with said fields up til' this point. Whether it's from inexperience, bad luck, or shitty conditions, couldn't find a single active mushroom there in four hunts. Not the best start to one's first year =p

Cow pastures in the NW provide the proper conditions. The place you mention, I know for a fact, is no exception. Its just hit and miss. Your on the right path.

Man today's hunt sucked!!! I went through a cow pasture and picked it amost half clean until I found real liberty caps, I had been picking Panaeolus papilionaceus which couldn't figure out what the hell it was cause it had a black spore print that looked kinda purple to me but I couldn't find a good picture or description to match it with. So I figured why not pick a bunch and check identity at home and once i knew the identity then eat up.. so I get half through my picking and I actually come across liberty caps but only like 10-20 of em and too damn smal to do shit.
I finally get done, open my book and flip past the panaeolus section I had neglected somewhat before and was like YES!!! there they are, Panaeolus papilionaceus... but FUCK they aint even god damn active so there went 90% of my shrooms and nothing to fucking trip on.

I also found a couple big ass Panaeolus semiovatus but disregarded them cause I never seen the picture in my book cause there aint no pictures for them. Till I just looked em up online tonight.

So in conclusion Either I'm the bigest dumb fuck in the world or this is fucking hard shit man!!! How the hell do those mycologists know their shit???

more books.
more hunting.
more reading.
more pictures.
after a while, you remember the specimens you couldn't identify, and you analyze their characteristics while you sleep. sometimes, i identify mushrooms when i am taking a shit. from memory. with no book.
more books, more hunting more reading more pictures, more specimens.

more.

mwuhahahahahah....
wish i had libs, all i can find are stupid azures, cyans and stuntzii

mwuhahahahahahahahah....

seriously, you should just keep collecting libs till you have enough.

Immobiletoe, Panaeolus papillionaceus is similar to Panaeolus subbalteatus. The picture in paul Stamets book of P. papillionaceus is really P. sphinctrinus. It was a mis-identified photograph,

and Ffoccopus,

There are more than 1500 photographs of psilocybine mushrooms described with for 55 species of psilocybian mushrooms at my site at http://www.mushroomjohn.com and also in my field guide posted right here at the shroomery.

Woith field guides for id of these special shrooms.

If you want to hide mushrooms. Get a bag from mcdonalds/burger king. On the top half stuff it full of rappers/trash. Then have the bottom free for mush. Ive done this many times. Been talked to two times by a cop/ranger and both looked into bag saw trash and didnt search it. Just say got some trash i was going to go throw away. Shroom on guys/girl!

The ultimate way to cover up mushroom hunting in grassy areas like san francisco parks, dune grass, is to use a metal detector. You can walk slow, look at the ground, pick up shit and put it in your bag and no one will ever ask what you are doing

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

You might find some Liberty caps in Enumclaw but they wouldn't be worth the risk. The farmers down there don't like folks in their pastures and they are armed plus they like to call the cops. And Liberty caps are the crappiest pcilocybin mushrooms in the NW. Stay in town and check landscapes and lawns for blue ringers and baeocystis starting in late August or September.
