Is this the right "Agar Agar" I guess?????
    #2008777 - 10/14/03 03:52 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Its all my friend could find, and it was from an Asian Food Mart. He just asked one of the stockers at the store and they knew exactly what it was. I am still not sure what "Asians" use it for. And it wasn't exactly cheap! Is this the right stuff I assume? Thanks

If it's agar, it's either pure agar or it has nutrients in it. You want pure agar. If it has nutrients in it it will list them on the package. If not you should be fine.

yeah, i don't htink you'll find much cooking agar that contains nutrient admixtures.

also, "agar agar" means that it is only agar.

It is the right kind.

The Asians use it as we use geletin...as a gelling agent.

It's not the same as bacterialogical grade, but it should work just fine.

You should be fine...

What you bought is a food grade agar. Thats perfectly fine to use. Bacteriological grade is a high-end, lab grade agar. Both are fine to work with. The most noticible difference between the two grades is that bacteriological grade agar gels up faster. Technically bacto is "cleaner" but for most mycological work, you can get away with food grade agar.

Good Luck,
Lana

I've used that brand before and it works. It just gells up at a higher temperature than good stuff. If you are going to put H2O2 in your agar you better get the better grade (not food grade) it gells up at a lower temperature. Just be cautious about some of the food grade agar some contain fugicides and they don't tell you that on the package. If you don't get good growth then your agar might contain some.

It is actually used more as a corn starch, in most cases.

Depends on the dish though, they prefer a gelatinous texture to their sauces. We prefer a creamy texture.

When I use the "Telephone" brand stuff, all I notice is that the media isn't as clear as the good stuff which I use everyday at work. I guess I'll have to pay attention to the gelling temps next time I pour plates at home....
Anyways, it works fine, I use 8 gm per 500 mL of media.

Yah my friends agar plates aren't clear at all, yellowish hue, here see. It gelled up good though. So far so good. Next question is, he has 6 total plates to work with, he needs help deciding what exactly to do with them. He is thinking 3 spore (syringe) injections, and 3 mycelial "graphs" or transphers from a brf cake. Though the cake is contaminated!? It just recently became contaminated but the growth of the mycelial matt was very strong and healthy prior to this contam. Would it be a good idea for him to possibly transpher some healthy slices to the agar? Each from different sections of the cake? If not, prints from the casing will have to work (he dosn't have any other way to duplicate that specific strain.) Thanks again.
