Do you use any special soil?
    #2004671 - 10/13/03 09:32 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

At the moment I use compost made from only veg and fruit mixed with rabbit shite and a little sandy soil from teh beach. Then I set it on fire and mix in vermiculite.

Do you have any special soil recipes that make your plants grow 20 feet high?

It's not the soil as much as how you grow it.

I haven't heard of burning compost before using it. How do you burn rabbit poop, rotten vegi's, ans sand anyway? I have heard of using pot ash in the soil mix to add something benifical. I've also heard worm castings are good, as is bat guano.

As far as compost goes, I've read that while it's still breaking down it generates alot of heat so it shouldn't be used until it is totaly broken down. Since you set yours on fire beforehand I guess that might not apply.

(shit) i couldn't believe you set your compost on fire, it is supposed to compost itself and THEN it will turn into GOOD soil. why not to use ashes from you fireplace then??? would be the same thing. =P
you should use rather dark soil than beach sand... (mixed with compost).
common sense plays a great role into growing whatever it is.

i'm surprised you haven't like exposed pockets of methane and had a few big flames jump out.

I normally add ash from the fireplace in the winter.

I burn garbage on it and I fork it in before it finishes burning. It is mostly to kill parasites and slug eggs. Some of the plants I grow are very vulnerable to pests even before they break the soil. There is another reason as well but I've completely forgotten it. It definatly increased my germination rate and apart from that it's just damn cool. Okay?

Felix I do not understand what you are saying.

oh okay, so you don't like set the whole pile ablaze, rather burn some garbage and mix it in.

One question: what kind of "garbage" are you burning?

LOL... I was picturing you setting the whole pile on fire too.  After I stoped trying to figure out how one goes about setting something that's basicly dirt on fire, I started trying to figure out why you would do it and how it would be benificial for your garden.

it makes more sense now.....

I'm curious about this also. How does one make a good soil and what store bought or easily obtainable things does one start with? How does one make a rich yet light soil that drains well? etc, etc.

Thanks for any info.

it's funny.....
in the other thread my point of view is that chemicals arent too bad, yet whenever I handle perlite I'm always real anal about the dust from it b/c I heard it was bad and caused cancer or something......

LOL

I never heard that about perlite, but a similar thing was said about vermiculite because of the asbestos scare. Though vemriculite was shown not to contain asbestos as the one sample from a certain mine that's not used did.

If you want to avoid dust though spray the perlite with water before you use it or moisten it a bit somehow. Same with vermiculite.
