Get out of the city man, urban living is a killer. Lots of people in cities are on welfare for a reason. The smartest folks work in the city and live in the suburbs. Go somewhere northern, rural/suburban, and socially liberal. A place with a higher minimum wage, and low community college tuition costs. And stop getting DUI's, if it's that much of a problem, quite driving and get a bike. What kind of city are you even living in where you have to drive around.

That's a very good point. I will definitely look into moving to a place that has a slightly better economy.

You're absolutely right there was no reason for me to get a car in this city. My only reason was to drive around a girl I was seeing, I could afford it and I could visit my mother and brother who live a good two hour drive away. After the first offense I told myself I wasn't going to drive again because it was not necessary and was a money destroyer.

I love my bike. Thankfully this city has some nice bike trails to keep me sane.

Also you don't have to worry about me driving again because down here when you get two criminal Offenses (my first offense was a hit and run, same thing because I was trashed and it even said it in the police report) you get an automatic three year suspension...plus a year of the interlock. But I am able to wait out that year if I get my beginners again and not have to do the interlock. I'm not to upset about the sentence because it takes the insurance companies that long to take you out of the "High risk" plain. God forbid I get a third within ten years it will be suspended for ten years. I am not worried about that as I strongly feel it was my heavy drug lifestyle giving me the artificial sense that I was never going to get caught with an open bottle of Whisky. Coke was having the reverse effect on me when I was doing it for so long I don't know why I had the relapses. I'll never touch the stuff again! I don't even drink coffee anymore because of it. Somehow I am so sensitive to caffeine where as before I wasn't.

What are you talking about?  City living is the best.  You don't need a car and you can even walk or bike to work.  With multiple DUIs this guy can't possibly afford his insurance on minimum wage so living in the city is actually the best choice.

No shame in going back to school. I am upgrading right now, preparing for university in the Fall. I will be 29 at the end of the summer, btw.

I have no advice other than that. The lure of trades work is enticing, I must admit. It was the road that I considered for a few years, but decided that money was really the only plus side of doing trades work. Looking around at the lifers, turned me in the opposite direction, and I am very glad.

Returning to school has been great, for me. Highly recommend it. I should have gone a decade ago, but was too busy taking drugs.

I'd recommend to keep looking for better work. I am pretty happy with my position - I drive a truck and do deliveries. It's a bullshit job and certainly not where I want to be, but it's also really flexible, kind of fun, fairly easy, and pays the bills.

Finding a job that pays more than a thrift shop shouldn't be impossible IMO.

Neither does being $60 000 in debt and still making minimum wage.


going into debt to work in a field you really don't care about is a recipe for disaster. my point is to go after what you are passionate about, within reason, rather than chase a paycheck in a highly compensated field just because you want the prestige. that's an ass backwards way of viewing education. and i don't recall saying anything about earning minimum wage.

I chose the path of trade work.  Made shit money for 2 years.  Slowly started my own business now I'm doing alright for myself.

I'm not that familiar with industrial painting, but perhaps you could figure out a way to make some money by yourself with the skills you learned?

I would pretty much have to start my own business as well, for Auto-body painting perhaps. My skill would be very useful if their was another company that was similar to my last one. Having attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, able to spray all sizes and types of parts that have articulate edges and corners, spraying various types of top coat colours of isocyanate , where white drips the most..it was the most difficult. It was so much fun to do when you knew what you were doing. THe work shift went by so fast and it felt rewarding when you look at how much you painted and didn't make any mistakes.

And PDU I am looking forward to going back to school. I am 27 and am hoping to get in next year or maybe even this year. I feel because of my age and maturity I will be able to take it more serious and perhaps meet some very interesting youngsters. My older brother went to college and two of his best friends there were ten years older than him.

i spent 11 years in a trade and i'm currently in college. there's absolutely nothing wrong with learning a trade. mad respect on my end. but, i also think college is pretty cool (as painful as it is sometimes).

This is the case with me. I am doing very well (although the math is a challenge, i've been honor roll in my other classes.) I really enjoy and understand the material, and have forged good friendships with all of my teachers.

At this level (highschool upgrading) there are all types in the classes - ALOT don't give a shit and are just using it as a prerequisite. The mature students mostly excel.

What are you thinking about going into?

i turned 36 the other week. i started back in late '10. i haven't done any summer semesters because there's just been too much going on with my life to fit it in, and now i'm slowing down my regular semesters because i feel like i've been fighting a war for the past five years. but i really enjoy learning and i'll never regret going back. i'm a phil major, but i'm considering law and/or teaching down the road and i'm already in good with a company in the meantime.

Yeah a mature student thread sounds like a cool idea.

I was considering a couple things when I started back but I've decided to pursue a computer science degree. I ended up dropping a calc course that was not going well and barely scraping out a pass in a geology course that I missed a major assignment in (worth 40% of the mark), but I got a pretty good mark in computer science and had a lot of fun. The profs of the course told me I would have a good shot at a TA position next year too which is cool. I'm meeting with the guy this week to talk about it. My wife is also back in school now doing a pre-health program.

calculus is hard. i'm attending a tier one school that's one of the best for math, finance, science etc. in the state. they don't fuck around with math here. only class i've failed. but, as it turns out, i think intermediate logic will replace my math grade, so it's all good. not that it'll be fun but at least it's relevant to my degree.

Yeah I was not prepared for it and the lectures were all at 8 AM which was pretty awful. There were weekly quizzes and it seemed like there was a lot of focus on speed and punching things into the calculator quickly. It was a "Calc II for Physical Sciences" class, which was not going to be any good for computer science anyway. I think the one for math and computer science has more focus on proofs and I prefer that kind of stuff. I will need to re-take a different Calc I course to get into it, but I think I need the practice to do well anyway.

I used to be pretty good at it in high school but I got really out of practice with it. That was part of the problem this time, I was kind of cocky and expected it to come a lot easier.

For the summer semester I'm taking a logic course which sounds interesting. The first class is tomorrow evening.
