I feel like sharing my little struggle with you all in hopes of finding some positive advice and perhaps similar experiences. I guess there is no one to blame but myself by deciding not to go to college right after high school (in hopes to go back after a lot of money is saved up.)

I ended up making $18/hr my first year out then then next year $28/hr. I was making so much I knew I couldn't just quit to go to school. What a stupid move because I got so comfortable with it that I thought I would be working there for ever. I was ignorant to not anticipate a huge company lay-off and be out of a job.

Which is what happened 16 months ago. It couldn't of come at a worse time as I got my "second" DUI just a few weeks before. It has been incredibly hard to find work in the city, there were a few places hiring painters (I was an Industrial Painter) outside of the city but obviously without a license it seemed rather difficult. So I exhausted my EI and my companies Life insurance savings as I haven't earned a penny in 16 months.  I was so busy dealing with probation, selling my car, unemployment and just losing everything that I missed my chance to get into college or University, for this year anyways.

So it came to a point where next month I was going to have to apply for  welfare. My mother had to go on it a few times and said it was the worse years of her life. I know I'm young and hardworking so something had to turn up. Eventually something finally did it was a job fair at a Thrift Store around the corner from my apartment. I got the job and start on Wednesday. The starting pay is minimum wage for three months and then there will be a raise which I am unsure of yet. I will find out from the other workers eventually.

Overall I'm just glad to be back earning and not having to go into the Welfare system. Making minimum wage is completely embarrassing and just degrading...I will be making less than what I was making on EI! It's a hard thing to deal with. Anybody out there have to go through this mess? I know that things can change very quickly in a couple of years. My plan is to get a government loan and get my ass into school, I could care less that these kids will be ten years younger than me..at least I know I'll be working towards something that is not minimum fucking wage! intense read, glad you're back on your feet as far as paychecks go.  certainly not fun going from 30 -> min, but it's better than 30 -> 0!

better somethin than nothin. i hear ya man. i'm worried of having to take less than my last job when i go huntin for one in 2 months after my trip. but ill be in an area where that should be only a remote possibility. location location location

Embarrassing and degrading will hopefully be enough of a motivator to encourage you to improve your lot in life.

Sorry to here about your situation. Where do you live? Minimum wage is less and worth relatively less in different states/cities. Hopefully you can get a better job soon, but obviously there are only so many jobs to go around, unless we start giving the secretary a secretary anyway.

That sucks, but to add a second DUI is just awful. Sounds like you've got attainable goals which to me sounds like you're going in the right direction.

Not much you can do, but to just deal with it. Try to keep a positive attitude, and best of luck to you.

In January I got a job making 15 an hour, working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tons of overtime, was making about 1600 a week before taxes. I barely even have my GED, so that was really great money. Worked there for a month. Then the work dried up. I kept in touch with my bosses and basically was begging them to put me back to work every few days but they just kept saying they didn't have anything. Around April I just gave up on ever seeing any work through them again and had another friend get a me a job working with him. On the 9th I started my minimum wage job at a major retail store.

You can do alot more with six figures a year, and a little regret, then 50, 000, and alot of love, in reality

Thanks for the up lifting advice guys thanks! I know this is going to be a time to fight for something better!

The drinking was very bad but being unemployed I've actually been able to control it a lot better oddly enough. My DUI incidences were four years apart and each time I had been addicted to coke where at the time of the offenses I was going through withdraws and drinking straight Whiskey! I was so lucky to keep my job the first time and it was just plain bad luck that the second time 80 people got let go from the plant shortly after.

I haven't touched coke since a few weeks before the second offense. I also have never touched Whiskey since. I will have a few nights of drinking beer with friends occasionally. I stopped all liquor, rum and vodka, a five months ago.

I live in London Ont, just a few hours west of Toronto. We have it pretty bad here, especially these past few years where long lasting factories have shut down. Unemployment rate is high!

I feel that school is the only way out of this dump. This Thrift store will give me a raise after three months, but I can't see it being higher than $15 for the first year. I can hack it out and find a factory that specializes in paint or get serious and go to school. It will be a full time job where I'll probably work part time on the side, but it's going to lead to a good career I just know it!
