Dozens Die in Ukranian Protests...
    #19588839 -

The protests against the government in Ukraine have reached the crisis point.  If you think they are bloody now, wait until the Olympics are over on Sunday and Putin then tells the Ukranians to get tough.

Shouldn't we be doing more to support democracy in the Ukraine?

Agreed.  Too bad there's no oil or lithium.

There's a lot of oil and natural gas there.  We are the world's largest producer of oil now, so we don't need their oil.  We need Eastern Europe to survive the second coming of the Soviet empire.  Putin said the biggest disaster of the 20th century was the break-up of the Soviet empire.

Fatal words for Ukraine.

We got our own problems and probably many more people will die if we go over to "support democracy".

I'm not sure what exactly we (I read "we" as "the U.S.") could do.  The recent release of intercepted calls between diplomats seems to indicate that (shockingly!) we are meddling behind the scenes vis-a-vis the composition of a theoretical new, transitional government.  I think as usual we will only cause problems if we try to back certain individuals and groups for our own interests.

The EU could certainly help Ukraine free itself from Russia's grip, by threatening to divest from Russian energy.  Instead it just talks the talk, without caring enough about Ukraine to actually confront Russia and risk drastically altering the energy status quo.

The US doesn't care about supporting democracies, it cares about "stabilizing" the region. And rightfully so. I am sure we are doing more than any of us know. Our people need to find a better method of communication than phones though, we know better than anyone else how vulnerable they are.

So Putin controls the Ukranian public?

As we've seen in the past 60 years, not everybody wants to be invaded by democracy and forced to be a democracy. What exactly is the motivation for joining the EU? Its in shambles right now.

Unless you want to count Socialist (shudder) Germany propping everybody else up.

This isn't abour democracy or russia, its about the west trying to force Ukraine to join the European union.

I say crush the violent protesters,  in any eestern country they would not tolerate violence an riots from demonstrators.

The globalists aligned with the EU are doing everything possible to make Ukraine look bad right now because they want to gain control of Ukraine.

I think the net effect would be positive for Ukraine, but there are some things to consider.  First, a lot of Ukrainians' savings would be hit by accession to the EU.  Ukraine would likely be on a three-to-five year track to adopt the Euro, but regardless when that came around the transition would be costly to individuals, both in terms of their savings' real value and the rise in cost of all goods that has traditionally accompanied the Euro switch.

There is also Russia's looming threat to expel Ukrainian workers from tens of thousands of industrial jobs, which Ukraine would struggle to replace and whose equivalents in the EU might require qualifications that put Ukrainians at a disadvantage.  There is also Ukraine's energy dependence on Russia, which the EU would have trouble compensating for given its own usage of Russian oil and gas.

The brain drain that would inevitably occur with relatively robust Western European economies being opened (if not fully and immediately, at least relatively) to Ukraine's young professionals is another thing to consider.

Still, I strongly agree it would be much more beneficial for the country's economy in the long run than remaining de facto aligned with Russian interests or joining a Russia-dominated customs union and eventual Central Asian EU equivalent.

I mean, Greece has looked like that second picture recently, although without the same level of bloodshed.  Spain, Portugal, and Italy have all been similar, and Croatia is potentially on the brink of such violence.  All due to corruption, high youth unemployment, and austerity, which would all still face Ukraine for the foreseeable future if they joined the EU.

The European uinion is fascist.  Why do you like it so much?  Why do you want the EU to skim the bank accounts of Ukrainians?

And being a Russian puppet is better?

The EU can't force anything on anybody because they don't have the balls.  Putin has the balls, though.  He's a scumbag but he he isn't a scumbag eunuch.  You can't spell eunuch without EU.
