Explain profesional photography to me

I do not understand why people pay hundreds of dollars to get these artsy fartsy shots of their life. They do so little work for so much money at things such as weddings. But then theres even wierder things like "pregnancy photos" or shit like that. Like come on you dont need to pay someone to take a photo of your stomach. Seriously get a friend or two to do it.

Yeah, while they're at it they should hire me to noodle on my guitar at the next Super Bowl halftime show.  This can't be a serious thread.

If it's so easy to make a ton of money why aren't you doing it?

I've had professional photos taken of me. The quality of the photos comes out VERY DIFFERENT than somebody who is snapping a shot of you with their cell-phone. Photographers use very expensive camera equipment and fancy lighting, taking a selfie of yourself while pregnant is obviously different from a high-quality photo taken by a professional. WTF?

Most photographers don't get paid that much. Events like weddings and graduation photos and magazine shoots are basically the exception. Weddings in general are very costly, I could probably charge over $1K-$5K as a musician just to play for a few hours at a wedding.

Photography is as much art as painting, composing music, or dancing. It requires extensive knowledge of lighting, lenses, distance, and so forth. Some people can take a photo that captures very moving emotions and feelings and really speaks out to you.

Everyone has it covered already. Photography is an art form just like everything else. I'd like to see you take the pictures professional photographers take. It truly is not easy. And it also is a way certain people express themselves/convey emotions like the poster before me said.

On the other side, everyone thinks they are an amazing photographer with their silly stuff on instagram. That is pretty amusing, not to say there aren't probably some awesome pictures on instagram too. Just kinda funny that this generation wants technology to make them into an instant success. An example of limitless luxury making us weak.

its about knowing the right lighting, lens and focal point. There is a ton of expensive gear a professional has compared to an amateur.

just because you can make a meal doesn't make you a chef. Same goes for photography
