Do you listen to lyrics? Beat? Both?

My Grandad told me some deep meaningful stuff today. Anyway the one that stood out was when he said lyrics are rubbish today because people stopped listening to the lyrics and tuned in more to rhythm and beat. There's one song where the lyrics are just "Get high with my niggaz, smoke weed with with my niggaz" over and over but the beat is pretty good....it's just shit lyrics. Have people become uninterested on what artists opinions are? Do they not care about good lyrics anymore? Could this explain the quality of music nowadays? Tupac was violent and irresponsible but his rap were meaningful and hopeful...

What are your thoughts? Do you listen to the lyrics? Beat? Or both?

Lyrics have importance, it's just that the majority of modern mainstream musicians are pathetic

Definitely correct about the younger generations. The message takes the back seat, and that in turn actually makes you more vulnerable to that message.

I love the whole thing, the way everything mingles together. Psychedelics taught me that. The lyrics are very important to me, so I notice a lot in new music that I don't appreciate. Your grandpa sounds like a cool dude. I really only ever had one grandparent and she died when I was 7 or 8, so it kind of bothers me that you put it as, "He busted a load of deep meaningful shit." That's pretty disrespectful, especially because he was saying that for you, not to you.
