Can someone help us ID these shrooms?
    #1944580 - 09/23/03 03:50 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I have attached two photos where you can see some of the ones that are intact, we have a lot more that have fallen apart but are hoping to eat them too if they are good! Sorry about the interference in the camera, I can't find my digicam.

a. Patchy 2-6" green grass in a cow field.
b. Dark brown gills, not attached to one another but closely packed.
c. Around 2-4" thin stems (about 3-5mm thicknes), around 1/4 inch to 1" cap diameter, but there's a couple a bit bigger.
d. Stems are very light - darker shades of brown. Looks shiny but is not slimy/wet. Smooth. Hollow feeling.
e. Caps are roughly half oval, sometimes a little conical. Smooth caps with no protruding nipple, some are darker, spreading in from round the edges.
f. I am not too sure what the spore print is? Anything that falls off seems dark brown, but its mostly just gills that have fallen apart.
g. Bruises dark brown / very dark purple i think, only bruised over the last 3-4 hours.
h. Smells like normal mushrooms that would be bought from a shop, but a less strong scent.

Found in Scotland, somewhere around Glasgow.

I wouldn't even think about,"doing those",,, if that's the only reason your here good luck.... really doesn't sound worth the time.. sorry..oh and if your looking to ingest any mushroom especially ones that you hunt for and pic, I would suggest doing alot of reading and research,, before hand,,, this is a dangerous hobby... bye..

I've known people who go to fields a few miles away and get shrooms, and, yes, ingest them. I just thought I'd try and get a decent opinion of if they are safe to eat or not, but I don't know if you're saying they aren't worth doing or that I shouldn't be asking.

I'm buying in some shrooms and a growing kit, and that way I don't have to ID them, but, once off, I'd like to try these tonight with my friends, if they are, as we suspect they may be, liberty caps.

I don't have any experience whatsoever with p. semilanceata so you may want to wait for another opinion. Here's a link if you want to study them .. To answer your question, no I don't believe they a p. semilanceata,(liberty caps), no I don't believe they are active or for that matter edible... keep hunting.. and reading.. here's a link http://nepenthes.lycaeum.org/Plants/Psilocybe/semilanceata.html

On closer inspection, they look quite close to Copelandia Cyanescens?

ok, copelendia and panaeolus have black prints, this rules these out.
liberty caps are morphologically different than what you have and have a very dark purple print, almost black, a little on the brown side.
they would also have a pellicle you could literally peel from the surface.

about the only mushrooms you should concern yourself with hunting (for psychadellic reasons) in the UK would be psylocybe semilancaeta and possibly cyanasen.
in either case there would be a bluing reaction. libs dont always blue, but they usually do. there should be no "purple" bruising, that would be indicative of laccaria mushrooms

Yeah I have an idea! How about YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS DON'T EAT UNIDENTIFIED MUSHROOMS UNLESS DYING SOUNDS FUN!!!!

The mushrooms in your pictures are probably an inactive Panaeolus, but if you continue to approach mushrooms with the attitude you and your friends do, your bound to get a hold of something that will make you sick or possibly kill you. Its like playing russian rolet, if thats your cup of tea than I guess eating unidentified mushrooms would be right up your alley too.

I guess natural selection has to continue in the human race somehow.

I didn't say I was going to try them, they just insisted on it after looking at liberty cap pics...

As i said it was the first time i went picking and I intend to buy or grow my own from now on.

They've convinced themselves it'll be fine because other people who got mushrooms from the same area, and I know that's daft as I saw a couple of other types, mostly with white gills.

I know that's russian roulette, and I'm not doing them just now because of that, I'm waiting for the ones I've ordered. But they've gone for a small dose assuming that they are liberty caps. You don't need to lecture me, I was only looking for advice.

Well... why don't you print this topic out and show your friends before they eat more and start throwing up/dying on your carpet. Also maybe you should NOT listen to any of friends dumb ideas anymore especially when they think they've found a good mushroom to "DO". :shake:

especially when a small dosage of the wrong type is MORE than enough to kill you (even one gram wet)
and you know for a fact that those arent active.
why risk it when you KNOW theres no reason? next up your friends will tell you they got a little buzz (placebo) and then they will eat more.

I agree. Totally.

But the only reason I know that they aren't active, is that as far as I'm aware, the active ones bruise blue, but when you had said 'libs dont always blue' they were off!
