Where to get cheap oyster spores? (+oyster questions)

I can't really justify 20 bucks for an oyster syringe, so any ideas? Are there any free spore rings that have oyster spores? or does anybody want to trade for an active sporeprint?  :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2:

I see a lot of different oyster variations, such as the pink ones and whatnot. What would you recommend as the best for a beginner, and perhaps which one tastes the best? i.e. what are the differences besides color? :wink: Thanks.

Pink oysters are not the best eating oyster but they are easy and plentiful to grow. They do the trick for getting started. Hanging straw log + pink oyster = lots of food.

A common problem cultivators run into with oysters is that when sporulating, oysters will literally sporulate everything. Cultivators beat this by harvesting earlier or have isolated non-sporulating strains. You're best bet is to buy oysters that originated from several different farms and attempt to print. Hopefully, you will find a sporulating strain. Take the print on anything BUT white paper, so that you can see if it dropped any spores (oysters have white spores). Pick plastic wrapped specimens, preferably younger. Now keep in mind that you will have to do agar isolation if you decide to work with spores.

If you cannot find a sporulating strain, just clone the youngest, cleanest specimen.

When you are done, eat the mushrooms.

YidakiMan, I don't understand completely. You say that I can get spores just from store bought mushrooms? I don't think any of the stores near me carry fresh oyster mushrooms. (I'm in Southern California.) And you said something about agar, does that mean if I buy an oyster spore syringe from somewhere like sporeworks.com, I'll have to use agar? I couldn't just inject directly into some kind of spawn like popcorn, and use that to spawn straw?

You could do the direct inject thing, then get prints as well as a feed.
Most people would go for agar as you can be sure you are cultivating indevidual 'strains' that look to have good characteristics. ie start your own strain and maintain with agar and your fridge. Rewarding.
Im sure someone will send you a print, it doesnt seem right to pay $20 for oyster spores.

Actually from syringes from Sporeworks are cultures. I bought a pink oyster culture syringe and I was very unhappy with its performance. Try the Florida Mycology Research Center for spores. All spore samples are $10. I can almost certainly say that you will have a very hard time making a clean syringe from them.

YidakiMan, would a non-sporulating strain leave absolutely no print? I have tried to print from store bought oysters and have gotten tiny amounts dropped. I thought they were all gone before buying.

A non-sporulating strain will have gill planes that are completely lacking hymenium and basidia, the structures that form spores. If your specimen dropped spores, you are definately on the right track. If you can see spores then likely you have more than enough. Given that there are 25400 microns in an inch and spores are less than 10 microns in diameter, a square inch of spores would have over 6,451,600 spores! Only two are necessary to form a strain.

I tried to scrape what there was into a kyro jar, thoug I'm guessing even if they go there will be contam issues. I also made couple of jars from carefully cut interior flesh, so I'm hoping to get something going either way.
I tried this once before in failure, but this mushroom was much fresher, so my hopes are high!

I already posted this on another thread, but I thought it might be useful to some that you can get 5lbs of colonized Pearl Oyster spawn form fungiperfecti for $16. THis is enough to innoculate 10's of gallons of bulk substrate AND start your own culture.

I just bought 1# of oysters from a local mushroom farm. It cost me three dollars and I am going to clone them tonight.
