So Ohio just executed a murderer/rapist. His overdose lasted over 15 minutes before he died.

I can't argue that he didn't deserve a life sentence or an execution for his heinous crime, but doesn't this seem unethical?
The executioner obviously knew what they were doing and that this would happen, why would they not give him a larger dose for faster effects?

(CNN) -- Ohio inmate Dennis McGuire appeared to gasp and convulse for roughly 10 minutes before he finally died Thursday during his execution by lethal injection using a new combination of drugs, reporters who witnessed it said.

He was convicted in 1994 of the rape and murder of 22-year-old Joy Stewart, who was seven months pregnant. Her relatives were at Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville to witness his death, according to tweets from television reporter Sheila Gray.

McGuire's "children and daughter-in-law were crying and visibly upset," Gray tweeted.

A Dayton Daily News reporter who also watched the execution said that before the drugs took effect, McGuire thanked Stewart's family for a letter he apparently got. "I'm sorry," McGuire reportedly said.

The execution generated controversy because, like many states, Ohio has been forced to find new drug protocols after European-based manufacturers banned U.S. prisons from using their drugs in executions -- among them, Danish-based Lundbeck, which manufactures pentobarbital.

The state used a combination of the drugs midazolam, a sedative, and the painkiller hydromorphone, the state corrections department told CNN.

In an opinion piece written for CNN earlier this week, a law professor noted that McGuire's attorneys argued he would "suffocate to death in agony and terror."

"The state disagrees. But the truth is that no one knows exactly how McGuire will die, how long it will take or what he will experience in the process," wrote Elisabeth A. Semel, clinic professor of law and director of the Death Penalty Clinic at U.C. Berkeley School of Law.

According to a pool report from journalists who witnessed the execution, the whole process took more than 15 minutes, during which McGuire made "several loud snorting or snoring sounds."

Ohio ran out of pentobarbital in September, according to JoEllen Smith, the spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

In response to that shortage, the department amended its execution policy to allow for the use of midazolam and hydromorphone.

Stewart's body was discovered by hikers near a creek in southwestern Ohio in February of 1989. Her throat was cut and she had been sodomized.

I never understood how this shit happens.  They used IV midazolam, the dude should have been out cold. 

I think its plausible he could have been entirely unconscious and unaware he was snorting and/or making weird noises.

As others said, just because he was convulsing, making sounds etc, it is unlikely he was conscious to experience any of it. They really dose you up.

Eventually inert gas chambers will replace lethal injection and inmates will die quickly and quietly

I'm talking 10cc of 100% heroin. I don't know how much heroin get be dissolved in 10cc of water, but I know for a fact that it would kill a bear.

I'm talking 10cc of 100% heroin. I don't know how much heroin get be dissolved in 10cc of water, but I know for a fact that it would kill a bear.


Hydromorphone is dilauded....very close to heroin....I doubt the dude suffered....Christ, he's been waiting 20 years...I wonder how long the girl he raped suffered....then her family for the next 20 years wondering if justice would indeed be done. No sympathy here...at least for the dude who got injected.

Eh if I were to off myself it would be overdose. That or try to eat a grenade or other explosive devise.

He raped and killed a mother and her 7 month old unborn child... I don't see how him being sentenced to death is bloodlust.

he may have been out cold anyway, normally they put in a drug SOLEY to stop them from moving so it looks like there peaceful. But still thats a really strange combo.

On the otherhand I really dont see why people can be shot. Like come on its pretty much foolproof , heart shot = unconscious in 3 secs

I don't feel like getting into an argument about the death penalty - there is a reason most other civilized nations do not support it anymore. Anyway, re: bloodlust: What good does executing someone do other than satisfy bloodlust? It has been shown time and time again through various studies that it's ineffective at stopping crime, it's more costly than keeping them indefinitely imprisoned, etc.

Yeah, if you think about it....why not the guillotine?....I mean....Whack!...instant death...your brain is immediately disconnected from all other organs...just a little messy. The French were on to something though.

According to my morals, he should have been executed on the spot. Keeping him alive as punishment only hurts the victim... personally... i would have liked to get an overdose of dmt..

I've overdosed a few times on heroin and it wasn't unpleasant at all.  More to the point I didn't feel much of anything because unconsciousness came on damn quickly.  I've also witnessed quite a few heroin overdoses and nobody seemed to be in pain or uncomfortable during them.  :shrug:
