Just got a new desktop

Hey guys, so a slight twist on the popular "need a new laptop" threads. I just got a new desktop for my dad for xmas and I am gonna go through and make sure it is as user friendly as possible for his sake since he isnt overly good with technology (his old desktop runs windows xp and is 10+ years old). Also, I got a laptop at the beginning of this semester and was pretty busy so I havnt had a chance to go through and personalize and de-bloatware my laptop like i would have wanted to. and both of these run windows 8.
So basically, do you guys know of any essential programs to run on a computer nowadays? (already got avast and chrome).
Or any specific bloatware that needs to be removed asap?
Do yall know of any good guides to make windows 8 more user friendly (neither is a touch screen)? and i know i should run anything but windows 8, but i'm stubborn and gonna run it anyways.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Everything except the software you really use. Windows is fully functional out of the box, so I prefer to remove as much as possible upon preparing a new OEM machine for use.
As to essential programs: don't install anything unless you need it. You'll probably want to read pdf files, so I'd recommend installing FoxIt for that. And an office suite for the necessary writing and spreadsheeding; I prefer MS Office, but OpenOffice is sort of alright too if you're not too much of an advanced user (Calc really doesn't come close to Excel, and neither does Writer even touch Word).

Install a custom start button to get rid of that shitty Metro display. I'm an experienced PC, and Windows user, and the Metro display is the most damn unuser friendly thing there is.

when buying any out the box pc's or laptops, its usually best to just wipe the whole hard drive out and install a bootleg boot disk.

I've never used win8, but I caught a glimpse of a friend who was using it. It had a start menu similar to win7, so I think there is a way to configure and not use the "touch screen" menu.
Programs: CCleaner Defraggler VLC Some codec pack

Start8 is a paid start menu replacement, but is only like $5, can also remove the charm bars and hot corners, so it really makes 8 feel just like 7....
Bloatware is going to vary by company, I personally always just do a clean install of the operating system with it on a thumb drive and then use the key slapped somewhere on the machine to register it (on laptops there's always one on the back).
But you can just uninstall anything in Programs & Features that isn't necessary if you want to take short cuts..

Or just upgrade to Win 8.1, because they reintroduced the Start menu on popular demand. I think the 8.1 upgrade is free for Win8 users, but don't quote me on that.

i know win 8.1 was free for my laptop, i assume its free for any windows 8. I do like 8.1 a lot more, and i have turned off a lot of those shortcut things.
Appreciate the responses guys. gonna work on it some later today

I don't think that is true, they reintroduced the start button, which takes you back to modern ui iirr.... Same thing as the hot corner, lol, but you can see it, which apparently people who can't watch the tutorial need...I have 8.1 but have had Start8 installed so I can't say from experience.
At any rate, I'm damn near certain they aren't relenting on making everyone use modern ui, that's their future.... They've just lightened up and let people boot to desktop, have a visual cue to getting into modern ui, etc... It's still how you search indexed files/apps though, and you still have to deal with charm bars and hot corners and all sorts of other crap you don't necessarily want... Start8 is pretty decent solution, you can make the ui functionally identical to win7.
