It says linked to SR, what does this even mean. I wonder if they raided some suppliers that were already locally known and found a tor package on there slabs. The amount of bs and misinformation in a majority of these articles is fairly entertaining sadly.

Other articles on this actually calls them "significant users" of SR which could just mean they made large/numberous purchases. They were arrested on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs not necessarily supplying on SR.

I wonder what constitutes a "significant user" as a opposed to an insignificant. . .

The real question is, how was their information exposed?

Truth is probably that they were brought down and arrested via normal surveillance tactics, and somehow an association is being made to the SilkRoad, the media sucks.

Well two months ago there was a malware made by the FBI to identify Tor users. There was also a paper showing that given enough time your identity MAY be exposed.

AND now "NSA tracks Google ads to find Tor users"
:tinfoil:

I could just be paranoid and they could have just been arrested and then later linked to SR like already mentioned. Another possibility could simply lose lips.

The FBI infected FH with a malware that was tailored to one specific build and only harmed Windows users who had JS enabled, there was a update, and all was well.

Google ads? lol.

My friend was saying something like apparently TOR was created originally for the FBI to use so as great as it is, they know the ins and outs of what they're going up against.  He also said he wouldn't be surprised if there were guys so smart working for the FBI they couldn't crack the codes, figure out PGP, etc.

That's just what he said, I always thought PGP was uncrackable and TOR was untrackale but I keep an open mind.  He didn't say for sure, he just said you've gotta assume they got some realllll smart guys working over there with their life-goal, or at least large career goal, just to bring this down whole thing down (tor/deep web black markets, etc)...

Cracking encryption isn't a case of being smart.  It's a numbers game.  It would take hundreds of thousands of computers years to crack 128 bit encryption.  By the time computers become fast enough to make it practical, they'll have upgraded to more bits of encryption.

Yea that's kind of what I was thinking... there's no just "shortcut" through it all right?  I didn't think so but that's sorta what my friend was saying, like it was something that could just be solved.

False.

Japanese have broken both 923-bit encryption as well as 676-bit encryption. French ministry has broken 616-bit encryption.

The Japanese record was done with 21 computers, taking 140 days.

That was an entirely different form of encryption.  AES and PGP 128 are still quite secure.

That is what is called being lucky.  As Enil said, it is a numbers game.  Yeah, they may have done it in 140 days, but when dealing with averages that's how it works.
