If it is a true fatass then it takes a bit of extra care to make sure that it is dry. The dry content is roughly the same so potency isn't really affected. If it a mutant that resembles a fatass(I have seen a few of these) they can be extremely potent. I had one that bruised blue when I picked almost instantly. The bruising quickly turned black. I ate it on the spot and... let's just say that I got religion

3Mshroom (or anyone who knows)-

Are there any distinct differences that could be used to identify a fatass from mutant or vice versa.

Mainly water content. The flesh should be firm. If you slice a fatass they will sometimes form puddles and be squishy. When you harvest it slice the stem lengthwise with a sharp knife. If it is a fatass you will know.
If it is a fatass, make sure that you dry it well. Slice it in strips and dry these.
