Orange birch bolete id
    #18776830 - 08/30/13 10:50 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I'm pretty sure it is but thought I'd check before eating.
Found near birch and beech trees.
Should I just scoop the pores out?

Thanks
Steven

Also can you eat the stipe?

Leccinum species. The stipe is edible (and probably better than the cap), and you don't need to remove the pores unless they are very spongy.
That's a very nice specimen btw!

Yea, go ahead and cook all of it.    Just cut the dirt off.  Fry it in butter or oil at high temperature until it turns light to medium brown, 8 - 15 minutes.

Looks like Leccinum scabrum.

Nice fingernail polish, Steven!

I am not sure how you plan to cook the steak but it is likely you could do the mushrooms right along side them.  You can bake or BBQ mushrooms wrapped in tinfoil with some butter and salt inside.

Haha that's my girlfriend Sheree holding it
My plan is to fry the steaks and while their resting fry the mushrooms in the steak juices!

Why do you think it's that very rare species mostly found in Europe, and not one of the half dozen similar Leccinum?

My god that was amazing. That's the first mushroom I've picked myself and eaten. Tasted so nice cooked in the steal juices. Almost fruity. And you were right. The stalks are the best. Tastes like tatties start off with then you get an explosion of nushroomy goodness  Next on the list is porcini and chanterelle

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude, but I noticed you are often too specific in your IDs. It could be the species you mentioned, but it could also be something else, and it's always better to first eliminate all of the common possibilities before labeling it as something very rare.
