I've seen plenty of great 90's movies, some 80's, and even a couple good 70's and pre-70's movies. However, honestly, it's not just the video quality for which I prefer newer films for. It's also public opinion at the time. 30 years ago, people were generally more openly racist and homophobic. Not only that, but less open-minded and more prejudiced in general. On top of that, special effects weren't at the point they are now. I acknowledge the fact that there have been many fantastic films made decades or longer ago, but I gotta be honest, I just couldn't buy into the original Alien as much as I did the recent Prometheus due to the CGI or rather lack of thereof in the original. How are you supposed to be scared of a man in a suit?

So in all, that's why I said I'd prefer post-2000 flicks. Nevertheless, I may check out some of your suggestions.

I guess I don't think of psychological thrillers as being too reliant on special effects compared to other "thriller" categories. I mean you can have a very tense storyline even on radio with no visuals at all. Regarding the social atmosphere thing, I think it's interesting to go back and see what people were worried about in other time periods. Periods where there were all kinds of social tensions (fear of nuclear war, racism etc) produce some pretty paranoid nutty shit. The TV show The Twilight Zone has some good psychological thriller type episodes.

If your psyche can handle 2000, you MAY*** be able to handle the psychological torment that is The First Movie.

Its interesting this subject came up when it did because just a few weeks ago I watched the movie "1408" for the first time since it was released and it was an awesome film. Loved it so much I looked up the definition of psychological thriller on wiki and found shutter island, coincidentally I saw it on t.v. the day after I looked it up. I thought it was a well produced well written film very cool.
Psych thrillers kind of reminds me of a modern age twilight zone which im a huge fan of.

1408 was quite disturbing movie. I liked it very much.

A fun fact: When the clock starts counting down from 60 minutes - the movie ends exactly after 60 minutes

Also suggesting Dark City (If you're going to watch it be sure to grab the directors cut as the whole suspense of the movie is spoiled in theatrical)

A goodie that I saw recently was chained, its an indie film about a kid who is kidnapped by a taxi driving psycho. Got a great indie feel and acting is superb. Only bad thing is the ending which kinda leaves you feeling... hollow

The Hand that Rocks the Cradle if I recall correctly was a pretty damn good psychological thriller. Pre-2000 though.
