Where should a paranoid american relocate?
    #18666607 -

It seems that they just keep whittling away our rights little by little over the years. I'm pretty paranoid about them going all 1984 (more so) on us. Totalitarian control, all that jazz.

Maybe it won't get that far, and the country will just schism.

But yeah, does anyone have any idea if I would be better off in canada or the UK? English speaking would be nice, but I'm open to a totally new culture. This is all hypothetical at the moment.

Drug legality gives a country bonus points. I know peyote is legal in UK so thats a biggg bonus

Im surprised how little Americans care about these increasing intrusions on their privacy. When the bank finally breaks and the other countries start shunning America's worthless bonds I cant imagine any of the info they've been compiling will be used for anything good.

Hey, I'm not paranoid, but we've all wanted to just get the fuck out before..

I would most likely chose California, in the south, because I am a Floridian by nature, and I love the heat and the climate...

But if she ever did hit the fan, the Baja Peninsula might be SOL

Try portugal most drugs are legal there

Holland is much more free than the UK I think regarding laws and surveilance

UK basically has cops on every street and cameras on every street, and they will bust your ass for anything

You could also just quit cellphones,internet,creditcard,google/facebook/youtube etc.

I currently live in Taiwan and am hoping to move to Thailand after making more money. I honestly don't know if I will ever live in America again. Will only come back to visit every few years. My life is without a doubt better here than in America. Now I only have to worry about getting taken out by a CIA agent for speaking ill of my government.

edit: I met a bunch of Dutch people this past trip to Thailand and they were cool as shit. I'd definitely look into going there. I'm more of a beach bum type and have my sites set on Thailand

the bill about being able to detain citizens without evidence on certain grounds, possible rights taken away. just on a whim

Netherlands but you'll have to learn Dutch or you can't enter, English is the second language, being under the influence doesn't matter, if you have small amounts of drugs on you for personal use they just confiscate and let you go, i've had it happen that they just let me go ... Otherwise go live in Belgium (our doors are always wide open for everyone) and go live on the border so you have the best of both worlds.

you'll be even more paranoid in the UK and the cops are ASSHOLES

To the OP: if you're an American citizen, then you can live here (Micronesia) for as long as you want without visa dramas... tropical islands, warm waters, great fishing/surfing/scuba diving, totally laid back way of life, no malaria, nothing really too dangerous. Its a fairly off-the-grid kind of place - no traffic lights in the entire country, no breathalysers, no street names, no big brother...

But you also get a dysfunctional government, chronic power/water outages, shitty healthcare, limited choices in everything, crazy expats (like me) etc...

For reals though, just think of the old adage, "the grass is always greener on the other side".

If you truly want "drug freedom", and to be away from prying eyes, your best choice is to move to move to the woods, or a rural area that is not to rednecky. The west coast it pretty good for that, as I am sure other places around Colorado and the east coast(but I am unfamiliar with those areas). Stay away from big cities, find a chunk of land where you can grow your pot with a licence. Somewhere not to far that you can't hit up a good festival in a car for your other non growable substances. Close to a disc golf course would't hurt either. Don't look like a dirty hippie or a gutter punk and keep the "bad cop no doughnut" sticker of your bumper. Most importantly don't be a dumbass, basically talking to much.

Yeah, I hear that. My best childhood friend is a real estate agent and his dad has rented property for years now. I'd kind of hope to have a property management company/my friend do all the dirty work for me. I could just be the money/idea kind of guy.

I don't know.... I'm just an idealistic 26 year old traveling English teacher right now

The states are becoming progressively worse. We've lost pretty much all our rights with the patriot act and we all know how easy it is to be called a terrorist these days. We've lost other rights as well. Now the President can hold you indefinitely. Great. No problem.

Okay. One, its not all about drug freedom. I do what I do regardless of the local laws.

Two: My paranoia of the US government watching me would likely not "follow me" to other lands. I'm not crazy, just don't like the way the country is run.

Three: My way of life, and my philosophy on life, is not supported in the states. I would be leaving for the reason some of the original colonists left europe, for religious freedom.

I cannot share my 'religion' properly with people. I cannot openly talk about the things I find most interesting and puzzling. (psychedelics states, what they mean etc) This is why I do not feel "free" in america. this is why I want to leave.

Yes I am very lucky to live in a safe, food rich place. But it doesn't mean I shouldn't seek my own personal freedom to do what makes me happy.

Surfing, fishing, diving, snorkelling, hiking, weekends on uninhabited atolls, waterfalls... check.

here's the thing about Eastern Kentucky...

perfect weather. no extremes.

green green green. very lush vegetation. you find land that hasn't been stripped, and it's probably some of the healthiest soil in the country.

extremely dense woods with difficult to access crevices and gorges, would make invasion by an outside force very difficult for a number of reasons.

in certain parts, the energetic protection (think ley lines, electromagnetism, etc.) is perfect. these areas would be potential energetic sanctuaries for wizards looking to ride out disturbances in the force.

some might go so far as to call it the true god's country. it's a special place and it needs to be kept under the radar. you don't talk about fight club...

that being said, the major drawback to living in such a place is all the unevolved rednecks that you'll be sharing it with. some of those unevolved rednecks become cops...you get the picture.

the local politics are all run by mostly conservative good ole boys. it's not a place where open minded, free-spirited types can come and let their freak flag fly, at least not yet...

they, like myself would like to simply live without government intervention
in our lives as long as what we do brings no harm to others

But I did hear recently about some guy who exposed some shady government dealings and they got him back somehow. don't remember exactly.

if you're referring to a 'whistle blower' then understand that there's a
path that has to be followed, you cant just leak info to the press and call
yourself a whistle blower, if that were the case then national security
would be compromised constantly by people doing this shit

Quote:
You don't think the patriot act is bullshit? You don't think the government is often against its own people?

I think the government is full of butt monkeys that act in their own
interests, that often times being wealth, power and reelection and while
everyone claims the patriot act has stripped is of some rights, it hasnt,
it's redundant legislation since everything in the patriot act has already
been passed in some form or another over tha last few hundred years, it was
already illegal to blow up building that didnt belong to you or that you
were not contracted by the owners to demolish, it was already illegal to
make a bomb and put it in a car and illegal to murder people regardless of
the reasoning. the patriot act set aside funding, created government
agencies, defined a bunch of shit and set punishments like all the other
laws have done but it hasnt stripped you of any right, it doesnt allow for
your indefinite detention without trial or anything else that violates your rights

your rights arent gone, they're very much still there, your rights can be
violated, it does happen and people sue over it and many become wealthy
because of it. even the detainees in guantanamo have been to trial and they
arent US citizens and were not on US soil, many never were and were not
when they committed their acts against the US so event they have rights

Damn, I wish I could go do something like that. Sounds perfect to me, minus the water shortages, that could be a problem. My responsibilities have come to root me in place though, so probably not in this lifetime. Plus, where I'm at would be a great place to be when/if another dark age sets in.

That's another reason I couldn't go there I think though, when WWIII breaks out, or some hyper-radical local group of ethnic purists comes to power, you're basically unprotected. I doubt the U.S. govt would do too much to protect radical expatriates.

Very interesting topic this - too much to go into here, but to make a call on that stuff you really have to look into the geopolitical and strategic landscapes carefully. For instance, Micronesia is right by Guam (basically a major US military/missile base that covers the Korean peninsula and South China sea) and Kwajalein in the Marshall islands (another US military base with serious tracking systems), and not too far from Hawaii. Also Micronesia (zero military capability) has a treaty with the US that includes control of airspace and national defence obligations. China is right by our doorstep and continually trying to expand their sphere of influence (eg. trying to bypass Guam with direct flights into one of the Micronesian islands via a questionable business venture). Earlier this year, my corporate overlords sent me a security alert warning of nuclear attack (I'm serious), when North Korea was playing brinkmanship with South Korea (and by default, the US).

And on topic, for what its worth, I believe that the US has been accelerating the erosion of civil rights for the last 12 years; and IMO it's political apathy and a willingness to be deceived on the part of the American general population that is to blame. Poor education, corporatized media, and expert manipulation of the American national ego/psyche are contributing factors. What I see in the US (from an outsiders perspective), is the return of a form of McCarthy-ism, but the joke is on the American people because while you look in the shadows for terrorist threats, you're being led down the path of an Orwellian future, which is far more insidious than communism. I'm also willing to bet that as the US economy becomes less globally dominant (due to contraction, recession, meltdown, currency crisis, or simply due to the rise of India and China as economic powerhouses), the US Government will continue to play misdirection with the American people by whatever means they can (terrorist threats today, who knows what the mechanism will be 10 years from now - threat of environmental catastrophe maybe?)

For the record (and for the PRISM operators), I'm not anti-American, and I'm just as critical of my own home nation (Australia) but for different reasons.

Sorry for the long post - this stuff is an interest of mine...

What species (out of curiousity)? Is it a native, or did you make yourself a nice little outdoor grow of some sort?

Funny you said the thing about "orwellian future" Gloabal_Roaming, I've been thinking just how relavent 1984 is recently.

Sounds like a very interesting lifestyle for sure. And who knows, you might be safer in backwoods place like that than an American city really.

I got this thing with asian women though, it'd probably cause some problems if I lived in a place like that.

Just out of curiousity, what's your issue with Austrailia? What type of accent do your neighbors have when speaking english?

I just recently learned that marijuana is totally unregulated in exactly one country on this whole planet, that country being North Korea.  I like pot, but that doesn't make me want to move to North Korea.

We're certainly not up to face-cages yet, but IMHO the culture war has taken on that orwellian character. There is some very well-broadcast reason to feel deeply ashamed, insecure, or inadequate no matter who you are.

For that reason among many others, Micronesia sounds like fun on a bun.

George Orwell in fact would have hated the use of the word Orwellian.

In many of his essays and letters Orwell criticised words with formally precise definitions being used badly and the vague slide in meaning for many of these words. He was a fierce critic of Fascism but he would freely mock the promiscuous use of the word:

I never see any other people in these pictures, so I think the dolphins are pretty much just excited to have some company. Let's not forget, dolphins poop in their own water. I'm sure human poop would be more interesting than obnoxious.
