diamond, yes. they'll unfortunately be expensive because the holes take so long to drill and the grinding/polishing takes a long time. i'll probably start with a chillum design I came up with years ago in pipestone.

yeah I can imagine it takes forever to grind a hole in rock. I've tried a few times but I keep breaking the stone. I think the vibration from me dremel tool is what breaks mine every time:shrug:

hey about those poker chips... i think i might get a lathe and do it myself, i'm pretty interested in learning this stone inlay myself. as well as multi axis...

do you think it would be possible to just inlay the outside of a long cylinder and cut the chips off the cylinder without breaking the inlay stone apart? or would you need some kind of expensive saw to do this well? [edit: what am i thinking about a saw for i can just part the chips off on the lathe lol]

and do you think inlaying the entire outside of a cylinder would be difficult to get and equal diameter all the way down, will the chisels cut stone fairly smooth? i guess if it wasn't smooth on the outside of the chips though i would still be happy anyway...

that's awesome you're Gettin a lathe!! can't wai to see you kick some stuff out!:rockon:

and I do not think you'll be able to coat a piece of stock with rocks and glue and be able to cut it with the lathe tools. IME the rock breaks and the tool chips. so I don't think you'd be able to part them off on the lathe.

the way I was thinking is make a bunch of chip blanks and do them one by one on a fixture. I know it would take forever but Im in no hurry. my 2pennys

do you have some kind of calibration tool? i'm not sure how you will get the chips all the same size but i guess you could measure them one by one, although if you got some too small that would suck.

here some stuff i made in highschool, also made a one hitter/joint smoker and a mortar&pestle but i don't have those with me.

and yes I would use some measuring instruments, dial/electric calipers are my basic measuring tools and I also use standard micrometer. and Gettin a straight piece can be easily done with a little practice and a good eye. I wouldn't make the blanks one by one. I'd make as many as I could at one time but do the inlay individually. so really it wouldn't require much measuring. once you have a straight piece of stock the only thing that you'd have to measure is thickness, fuck I miss my job. I could make a set of 6061 aluminum chips ad engrave whatever I want on them if I had a real lathe and a mill!

thanks, i was actually talking about measuring the stone, is it possible to have an outer ring of stone that is exposed. i think it would look awesome if i could see the outer stone from looking straight down at it as it sits on the table.
