Trying to figure out the hight of our tree using the law of sines?

So there's a dead tree in my moms backyard. We are worried that it might hit a neighboring house if it decides to fall...but not sure how tall it is. Soo I got to thinking. I could tape a laser pointer on to a compass, measure the distance from the base of the tree and set it level, then point it up at the top of the tree. If I know 2 angles I could subtract from 180 to find the 3rd. Using the law of sines, I could then figure out the length of each side SinA/a=SinB/b=SinC/c

Sound good? Does anybody have an easier cheap way to figure out the height of this tree that doesnt involve climbing it?

You could get people to stand on each other's heads until some one gets to the top of the tree.  At that point the top person would have to measure how far up his/her body the top of the tree goes to.  Then just add that top person's height to the combined height of everybody else in the human tower... and there you go.

Yeah, I learned an easy way to get a good estimate while working for a tree care company a few years ago.

All you need is a stick. What you need to do is grab the stick from the top about the same length as hand to your shoulder. By doing this, you can create a right angle with your arm outstretched, this stick pointing upward, and your line of sight when looking at the top of the stick. Now all you have to do is walk away from the tree until your line of sight through the tip of the stick is in line with the top of the tree, then you just measure the distance you are from the tree, giving you the height.

It's a bit confusing but only uses simple right angles, no math needed.

Trigonometry was always my favorite type of math because its practical and fun.

If you do indeed have a measuring laser you should be able to find the height using the law of sines or cosines. I get the two confused nowadays.
