Do electric drums suck?
    #18564089 -

Man I would seriously consider playing drums if I had my own house. I live in an apartment so obviously I cant play drums in here but I'd like to.

So I'm wondering if an electric kit would be any good?

I imagine you were headphones so you can hear yourself play but what does that even sound like, does it actually sound similar to playing real drums.

Anyone ever play on an electric kit before, what's it like?

Depends on how much money you're willing to invest, or the kind of deal you manage to find.

Some electric drum kits sound and feel awesome.
Others are complete toys that can be frustrating to play at best.

You're probably going to have to drop at least a grand to get some decent ones (unless you find a nice deal on some used ones).

I've had a lot of fun playing electric drum kits though.
They have a lot more options than your traditional acoustic kit; considering you can substitute any sound for any drum (as long as it's a decent kit).

well, i just got a deal on a slightly used roland V set, but even at that, it was over $800.  I was told by a friend who plays drums get either a Roland or Yamaha, and upgrade to mesh drums for the set when you can.

Electric drums are a good option if you want to practice where a typical drum set wouldn't cut it like an apt.
a decent set costs upwards of 1k, so it's cheaper than acoustic drums generally. But get a pretty decent one, not some cheapo piece of shit.
They can emulate any kind of noise basically, and the fancier ones let you configure just about everything.

I would imagine that anything decent could be plugged into a DAW.  I'd be surprised if you couldn't.

yea, the set i just ordered was 1K, but i got 100 off because it was a return.  I've been playing drum rhythms for a while because i played through a couple of books of drum exercises on an acoustic guitar, strumming to the beats.  Now im going to have to do the exercises slow to get the independence down.  since i never really played drums.

Also depends on what you want to end up doing. While I'm sure a lot of techno type music acts may dig it, the small time band scene around here wouldn't really look on you favorably if you tried to join a gigging band with electronics, unless you were really super talented and/or had an expensive, kick ass set. Not a big deal for practicing, but to be honest if I were auditioning a drummer to play with and they showed up with electronics my first thought would be that I was in for some amateur hour American Idol bullshit.

I've played for awhile and IMO there's nothing like an acoustic set.

But given your situation you can't go wrong with an electric kit. Lots of settings to mess around with and you can practice whenever you want. I do find that the rubber is less responsive than actual drumheads but i'm sure you already know that

I play on a roland with a demon drive double pedal, no chain.  its awesome and great for studio recordings.  however i am upgrading to a pearl e lite pro acoustic electronic. Electric or acoustic.  its a little over 3 grand though.

Arent electric drums just huge pressure sensitive MIDI pads? Youre not going to get real acoustic sounds for sure, but you can get pretty darn close.

Even real acoustic drums have multiple mics on them, and it takes outboard gear (hardware) to beef them up. Things like compressors, limiters, saturators, and the like. I cant stress how important a hardware compressor is on a drum track.

You can get a small electronic drum kit and run BFD2 which is capable of producing some serious acoustic drum sounds.

Electronic drums fail to replace a real drumset but if you use them in conjunction with real drums you can open up your sound.

You can create any sound, compression, reverb and eq you wish through a DAW. You can create patxhes so rhat you actually have hundreds of kit sounds.

E-lite pro guys, best of both worlds.  Interchangeable heads between acoustic or electronic.  why settle for less?
