Re: Anyone else prone to Alzheimer's? [Re: SunnyD]

I would fear getting Alzheimer's more than say, getting cancer or something. Terrible way to go. I'm glad though as it doesn't run in my family.

Re: Anyone else prone to Alzheimer's? [Re: Le_Canard]

My grandma and grandpa on my dads side of the family had Alzheimers. Although I blame it mostly on isolation, alcohol, and not doing anything to stimulate the brain besides watching Westerns and eating lots of cereal.

My grandpa had alcohol induced alzheimers and he sucked my grandma into it. He thought he was back in France during WWII and he'd take my grandma hostage and shit like that...it was a weird time. I wasn't very close to them but it was very hard on my father...

Alzheimers is a genetic mutation, but a lot of people that lack that genetic mutation still get Alzheimers. A lot of people WITH that genetic mutation don't always develop Alzheimers either...So I think there are plenty of other factors in the disease that have nothing to do with genetics. I think the best thing you can do is keeping your brain cognitively engaged, eat healthy and exercise. Smoke/vape/eat some weed too, that prevents the build up of senile plaque

I also think the whole family history crap comes from the fact that you're parents are going to teach you the same things that they do in life, whether that be poor nutrition or what, which most likely will cause you to do the same as they did and will predispose you towards a certain disease. Just eat lots of fruits and vegetables and stay the hell away from processed shit. That's my best advice for you. If you do that you should have no worries about alzheimer's. Also, I believe Omega 3's are great for prevention.

I have to agree with most of this.

No I just choose not to believe the for-profit medical industry that doesn't heal anyone ever. The only thing that heals is your own body and the way to make it heal is by giving it the tools to do so by eating the right foods. Every, I mean every, disease can be prevented by eating healthy. Nature provided us with a lot of tools to heal our bodies.

I'd like to see you say that when you actually get cancer and it's fully curable through the skilled work of a few surgeons and oncologists. :justno:

The incidence rate in the population as you get older is really horrifying.  You make it to 80, chances are you might be prone to exhibit some of the symptoms, if not a heavily dementing disorder OF SOME KIND.  Alzheimer's is only one form of dementia we have to deal with as we get older.  Alcohol and drug abuse lead to dementia in the elderly population and the Alzheimer's care facilities I was a partner in had a lot of alky dementias, as well as vascular dementias and non-specific cases too.

Let me tell you something, getting old is not for pussies.

Yeah, working on a geriatric psych unit really opened my eyes to just how many things can go wrong when you reach a certain age. It's terrifying and one of the main things that makes me want to ensure I'm being as healthy as possible now while I'm young.

That's pretty fucked up to say, but don't worry I won't be getting cancer because I prevent myself from getting it. I also know how to cure it if I do get it too, rather than have chemotherapy destroy my immune system and maybe the cancer only to have it return with a vengeance 5 years later. Cancer isn't a genetic disorder and you don't randomly get cancer. You get cancer because of your life choices. Go read about natural cures for cancer and people's success stories. Also go read about chemotherapy and people's horror stories. Hemp oil cures cancer.

Cancer is entirely genetic, it deals with the breakdown of genetic factors. You clearly have never studied the molecular mechanisms behind it. We get cancer because we live so long that the regulation mechanisms in cell division break down and mutate and/or because we're genetically predisposes, each case is different, thus being unable to regulate cell growth. Cancer is simply unproliferated cell growth, that's what causes tumors. It becomes dangerous when the genetic mutations spread. If your parents had shorter telomerases, you have the same problem and your DNA is more prone to mutation. Life choices can help to limit your likelihood of getting it, but they can't go in and change your built in predispositions.

Chemotherapy is a shitty treatment measure, but that's because we don't put enough money into new techniques. Lately we've been putting more money into cancer and we've been curing cases all over the place.

If cancer isn't genetic, how do children get it? :bored:

Please do tell me what life choices lead a healthy child to getting cancer. Or a healthy adult for that matter, plenty of people get cancer while having been very healthy their whole lives.

i remember when steve jobs and gangstarr got diagnosed with cancer and decided to fight it with spirituality and natural remedies which never worked.

Well, I would guess that he believes the carcinogens in the foods they ate could be the cause of cancer in these people.  An example of these carcinogens would be nitrates and sulfates that are basically put in the majority of the meats in the US.  Here is an article related to this matter
http://http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/do-you-eat-processed-meats-many-are-linked-to-cancer-2411581.html

Also I have read about how some cases cancer may be linked to vitamin deficiencies, your diet is important
