Pipe of the Four Elements, just finished. * 6

This minimalist pipe design is hard carved from a single piece of African Blackwood. The inlays on top of the bowl are of mussel shell, verawood, and blue coral. The three inlays denote the classical elements, air, earth, and water. The bowl itself represents the final element, fire.

This design is my interpretation of an ancient alchemists pipe. Those who would have smoked from it would contemplate the four elements, and perhaps find inspiration for their work. It would have been a gateway to the mind for those seeking answers.

The stem is accented with elephant ivory which has been recycled from an antique ivory carving. The use of ivory helps to solidify the idea that this pipe is from an ancient time.

Bowl: African blackwood

Inlays: mussel shell, verawood, blue coral

Stem: African blackwood, elephant ivory

I feel like this minimalist concept would have been better suited as a chillum. Awesome pipe though meat_hod :awesomenod:

It's real ivory, but it was recycled from an antique carving of a fist. This ivory would have been imported prior to the ivory ban.

Although I am an animal lover, and didn't much like the idea of using ivory, I had the ivory just sitting around and I felt it should at least go to good use, rather than sit in a dusty drawer.

Working with it was very bittersweet, a beautiful material, but a brutal history.

That said, I was as careful as I could be, in attempting to preserve every little bit of it, non went to waste.

I really do love animals though, I don't even kill spiders.

Also Ivory is fine IMO depending on the source.

I said it would be a shame to let it lie on its side. there should be a rack to make it stand up.

If you didnt sell it yet, build something to make that pipe stand up.
