More Iraqi Refugees Leave Tomorrow
Agence France Presse ?

BASRA, 19 August 2003 ? A third group of almost 300 Iraqi refugees who have been living at a camp in Saudi Arabia for the last 12 years will arrive back in Iraq tomorrow, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said.

?Some 298 Iraqi refugees from Rafha Camp in Saudi Arabia will arrive at the Safwan border crossing (in Kuwait) at 7:30 a.m. (0330 GMT) on Aug. 20,? UNHCR official Samih Bulbul said yesterday.

Refugees in the third group will return from there to the provinces of Babylon, Karbala, Najaf and Qadissiya, Bulbul said.

Since the fall of Saddam Hussein?s regime in April, more than 2,800 out of 5,233 refugees in the Rafha Camp have requested voluntary repatriation.

That's a rather nice way of saying "Since the US stopped dropping bombs on their homeland, 1/2 of the refugees in the Rafha camp now feel it's safe enough to return home."

Or it could be taken as 1/2 don't want to go back to that flea infested hell-hole.

Or perhaps the 1/2 that wish to return feel safe to do so with Saddam out of power.

How odd that you'd come up with the angle with the anti US slant.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. Considering the fact that they have been there since 91 that is probably the reason.

You're right, buddy.  My mistake.  I assumed they were the refugees who fled the recent wave of US bombings, but those people mostly went to Jordan.  The ones in the Rafha Camp were mostly people fleeing Saddam after Gulf War I.  Thanks for correcting me!  :spliff:

There were surprisingly few refugees during the current war.
