Lama's are even worse, the bastards spit at you.
We're about to buy a Lama for the ranch I'll be caretaking on soon.
Hopefully we get along better than my past relationships with lamas.

Lamas are evil, Alpacas are the way to go.

Might as well talk the ranch people into Alpacas. They're more expensive but you can make a lot of money on their fur. Hipsters love alpaca fur scarves. Make some scarves, sell that shit in Brooklyn, make bank. Just make sure you tell them it's free range and organic.

I'm riding a friend's horse over the summer at this ranch with cattle, I've always done the english jumping thing but I'm a little more laidback and just ride to have fun nowadays so I am going out with my friend and the owners wife in the near future to try my hand at herding these bad boys :

That's a 2000 lb animal, easily there. My friend's horse is a lot smaller than the ones I grew up riding and is a whopping 900 lbs and seems teeny tiny compared to their cattle. My friend brought up that they kept the bulls out there and that she wasn't sure if this was going to be herding cattle, or finding a happy medium between herding and dodging/running. If I was presented with the opportunity to ride a bull(rodeo style), I would do it if I had some time to rebuild some of the rustier muscles I haven't used all that much since I was jumpin' over thangs. I've ridden a mechanical bull. It does not come close to the real experience of being on a horse doing the same thing, they will drop one shoulder to pitch your upper body forward and your legs too far back and literally fling you off their back while simultaneously running out from underneath you. I can only imagine bulls are a little less agile because they're stockier, but much much stronger, angrier, and more capable of simply catapulting you off with sheer strength.

Cows honestly have traditionally scared me because I've seen them charge fences at me(but never while on horseback, just walking) so this may be an interesting experience, to say the least

I feel ashamed admitted this but a second cousin and I used to (When I was like 11) go into this farm's field and fuck with the cows..

Well it was really him, I was pretty scared.

We would hop the fence and he would walk near the calves to freak out the adult cows.. They would start charging us and aggressively moo.

If your friends are smart and keep your cattle and horses in seperate pastures, then the bull will be terrified of the horse regardless.

I've pushed several bulls that size from one pasture to another with just one horse.

Cattle are dumb :igor:

I would, but we're only getting one Lama to protect a herd of sheep from the coyotes.

I have another business proposition for the owners though.
If they go for it, I could end up pretty wealthy

I had no clue you rode! Cool! And yes, the cattle are kept separately from the horses. That explains why I've had random cows try and fuck with me while walking past a pasture on foot or something and they totally ignored the horses...our horses on the other hand were not used to cows and were scared shitless of them to the point where if we were taking them out on the road and saw a pasture in the distance the person up ahead would be like "YOU GUYS, HEADS UP, COWS YOU GUYS".

Yesterday I went out for a short ride around the property with my friend at dusk and a bunch of fucking turkeys flew out of the woods at us when we walked by the edge of the woods and it scared the shit out of me, but apparently those fuckers do that every single day at dusk? Is this common behavior, lol, or are these ones just assholes?

:awewtf:

Nah according to my grandfather in Alabama "turkeys can fly a good piece, they unusually do it round sunraise or sunset. Me n yer grandmaw saw them when we come up over the hill on our way to church last Sundee mornin and this turkey starts hoopin and a hollerin, starts flyin, flew a good piece, bout half a mile."

I haven't ridden in about 3 years now, but I used to ride everyday when I was the horse caretaker on a cattle ranch.

I'm moving onto a horse ranch by the end of the summer to be the caretaker there though; so I'm looking forward to riding every day again.

It's gonna be totally different terrain though.

Going from the mountains in Idaho, to the flat lands in Texas.

I can imagine, but being used to navigating steep terrain will probably have you at an advantage  - extreme terrain is sometimes a little scary on horseback - I'm used to rolling hills, but used to jump cross country and once on a course came across series of large, solid jumps within close proximity of eachother located on the side of a steep hill in the woods that I barely felt comfortable slowly walking the horse down, basically what you did was balance your horse up as best you could, and gallop down that thing and throw your upper body and weight back to avoid making the horse fall or flip over. It was terrifying, called "The End of The World" and the combo was retired from competition because it wasn't ambulance accessible. I still get a little nervous on very rocky steep terrain on occasion..like I would definitely have to be convinced to take a horse up a trail that looked like this..

PA/east coast has wimpy mountains compared to other parts of the country.
