oysters or angel wings?
    #18146353 -

Are these oysters or angel wings? I think the only difference is the host, whether it's coniferous or deciduous, right?

I read a little about toxicity of angel wings and the cases of the elderly Japanese folks from '04.  That doesn't really concern me, however my wife is pregnant and is a little nervous about eating them.  Any advice?

Not sure if this is true but I think pregnant women aren't supposed to eat wild mushrooms.

That is silly in my opinion...  You hear all sorts of thing pregnant woman are 'advised' not to do... Majority of them are urban legends, myths or just plain old crap advice... Sets women's movements back to the 1940s when women weren't allowed to do much while pregnant... Always thought that was more about male control, not concern. Maybe women should get into a car either... Car crashes, gasoline, seat belts... Oh the horror  /rant

I can not see anything wrong with pregnant women eating mushrooms as long as they are properly ID'd and cooked.  Would rather they eat mushrooms than tuna.... Just sayn

Just my 2 cents

Totally agree with your rant. I basically said the same thing to her. However, after picking them we tried to figure out if they were angel wings and came across toxicity reports and she got concerned. There are quite a few sources saying to stay away from angel wings now.

My wife ate all kinds of wilds while pregnant with both our kids (angel wings included) both kids are healthy and happy

I usually pass angel wings up thgough just because they're far less tasty than oysters

Wild mushrooms aren't advisable for pregnant woman because most species will and do concentrate toxins that may be present in the environment to hundreds of times the ambient level(different chems for different mushrooms). So even though most edible mushrooms will in fact be plenty safe for them there is a good chance mushrooms picked in an apparently clean area could contain dangerous levels of various chemicals, especially dangerous to developing fetuses.

I've never read any scientific fact that would indicate that pregnant women shouldn't eat wild mushrooms but I think that if she's not comfortable with the idea there's no reason why she should eat them
