Can I learn organic chemistry online?
    #18136477 -

Do you know of a place slightly more interactive than a 700 pages pdf textbook? I have no money for school plus I'm too old for this shit (and already in debt from long ago).

Anyway I'd like to learn some chemistry, organic chemistry to be more precise. I remember in my senior year in high school I took some advanced organic chemistry and mostly loved it - phenetoxythis desmethoxythat. But damn that was so many years ago I sure could brush up on mah skills :pirate:

I guess on a website like this its gonna raise an eyebrow or two - and no I'm not in it for the drugs. One related event that pops up in my mind is asking about the peptide coupling mechanism of PyBOP only to add lysergic acid and diethylamine and damn my teachers sure became huge dicks about my curiosity.

Anyway teach me some chemistry yo :tripmolecule:

The textbook would actually be a pretty good way to learn. Just go cover-to-cover. You could definitely learn organic chemistry that way, it's pretty much what I do in my ochem class. I'm like three-quarters of the way through the book, not much longer now... :minigun:

I did that with a biochemistry text and I aced that shit  It wasn't easy tho but satisfying for sure. I'm thinking o-chem would add up nicely to my knowledge in biology cause I'm not sharp enough (and lack the motivation) for physics and maths.

I'm thinking about one particular text I think it was called something along the lines of "o-chem lab survival text" or similar. Knowhatimsayin?

Organic chemistry is super interesting. We covered some in my biochemistry course. I too am curious for a resource to further explore it. I don't have time to take O-chem but would love to learn some, staying tuned.

You might want to ask this question in the chemistry and pharmacology forum here.

Google O-chem practice tests, they're not interactive, but they will deff help. Depending on which textbook your using I may have an answer bank for it which really helps for studying, but again is not interactive. In terms of interactive learning Khanacadamy.com is great for learning reaction mechanisms and it may help to get a sapling learning account. Hope this helps:smirk:

:cookiemonster:

My teacher also had some recommendations for sites with 3D animations of all the major reaction mechanisms. I can easily visualize molecular interactions on the atomic scale with incredible, AcidVisionTM but I'm sure they're helpful for those not so imbued. I'll put it up here if/when I can find it in my notes or I see it again. :vaped:

Also, OP, that's a fucking kickass sig. Is it a ribosome transcribing mRNA from fragments delivered by tRNA, or do I have my nomenclature all fuckered? :datass:

Honestly for chem I would 100% advise reading a text book and doing the practice problems ALL the way through.

Tedious? Yes.
Annoying? Yes.
Pull your hair out frustrating? Yes.

Looks like a RNA complex translating DNA.

Yeah translation, including various ancillary eIF factors and some translocator complex to deliver proteins inside the endoplasmic reticulum. There is a fairly popular video of the inner workings of the cell that shows it and it literally looks like the ribosome is taking a shit inside the ER

That's actually a brilliant idea. Learning while on the toilet. I'm not joking, I think I'll start doing this. Why not?
Thanks for the links everybody.

The professors IME are absolutely incredible.  They're all Ivy League profs - picture the best prof you had at your school.  They are better than that, and have better studying/lecture materials.  Then imagine it's all completely free.  That is my experience with Coursera.
