List the MOST BEAUTIFUL MOVIES of ALL TIME (eyecandy and mindcandy)
    #18090684 -

List the most beautiful movies of all time and tell us with each of these movies what makes them so beautiful for you.

Categories of beauty are:
-Beautiful Visuals (eyecandy)
-Beautiful Story (mindcandy)

To kick it off I'll start with five movies that really moved me:

AKIRA
If you only were allowed to see one Anime movie in your entire life, this is the one to get. Eyecandy + Mindcandy. Beautiful scifi clash between modern and traditional Japan. This 1988 anime is THE movie that half of all anime ever since has tried to imitate, but failed to.

BARAKA
Epic eyecandy of the beauty and splendor the world has to offer. No narrative or spoken word, nothing but beautiful imagery, to background music. Perfect for tripping. This is one of the movies you have to see before you die but the lack of narrative may make it hard on some viewers.

YAABA
This movie from Burkina Faso is the simplest movie you'll ever see. Beautiful and sad authentic depiction of African village life, a simple story of the friendship between a boy, a girl, and an old lady who is outcast for being a witch. Mindcandy, exposing you to a timeless reality many millions live in, outside the focus of western society.

THE NEVERENDING STORY
Fantasy family film from the pre-CGI era based on the children's book of the same title. Eyecandy, and the concept of the world of Fantasia makes it mindcandy worth pondering. Under no circumstances watch the sequel, its utter shite.

AVATAR
Beautiful CGI eyecandy with the best that CGI had to offer in 2009. Unfortunately the story is a conventional "great white savior" plot like we seen so many times before, but the eyecandy makes it definitely worthwhile to watch at least once.

Hell yeah the Shawshank Redemption, beautiful must-see film but give it your best shot watching it the first time, because it loses some of its surprise and wonder watching it a second time.

Definetly Baraka, just watched it last weekend for the second time. And to anyone thinking about watching this: Don't be afraid of the lack of narrative, it all just flows perfectly!

My suggestions, some are a little obvious

Samsara

Same description as Baraka, except I would suggest you wait until the tail end of your trip to watch this, there's some disturbing imagery here. Perfectly enjoyable sober too (I imagine). (ToolTroll beat me to it!)

2001: A Space Odyssey

Needs no introduction  Perhaps my favourite Kubrick, beyond stunning!

Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii

The high point of Floyds career for me. The band is on fire and the imagery and the camerawork stunning! Don't watch directors cut version as it contains some outdated CGI, the original is a visual feast!

Stalker

Andrei Tarkovski, the Soviet Kubrick  His style may seem boring to some but for those who enjoy it his movies are pure heaven. Definetly needs to be seen on a big screen with good sound.

I'm liking the selections so far.

+1 Baraka
+1 Enter The Void
+1 2001... (of course...)
+1 Andrei Tarkovsky (Particularly Stalker and Solaris)

I'd add Takeshi Kitano - many of his films (Dolls stands out for beauty, I guess. It's a bit overly dramatic for me though).

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. The animation in this is just beautiful. I love the themes and story too, though I prefer the story in the original. If you're going to watch Innocence, definitely watch the original Ghost in the Shell first. It has a fantastic soundtrack as well.
