Say goodbye to the diamond market.
    #1808053 -

In the latest issue of WIRED magazine a new method of mass producing diamonds was discussed. Supposedly, this newly found method can produce genuine perfect diamonds for roughly 5 bucks a carat. Check out the whole story here!

edit: I meant five bucks a carat, not 5 bucks a diamond, so i changed it. Sorry bout that

Yeah, so- it'll kill the diamond market just like it killed the ruby, emerald, and sapphire markets?

I don't think so. Diamonds were already one of the most common gemstones anyway -- the only reason they're so expensive is because the price has been vastly artificially inflated.

I wish the bottom would fall out of the diamond market.

The diamond industry is a wealth destroying, rather than a wealth building industry

How is that so? (I'm genuinely interested)

I will not be upset to see it happen. It is a 'fake' market anyway... the whole 'a diamond is forever' thing is what created it in the first place.

The people (slaves) that are forced to mine the dimonds would agree.

DeBeers hoards diamonds in their storage facilities in order to artificially inflate the price of the diamonds they are selling.

Yes the diamond industry needs to fall. At least DeBeers has to go or change big time. Obvious slave labour.

I try asking people, usually women, what they think about "artificial" diamonds. Most women I've asked say they would "rather have a real one"...

But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

I once heard a rumor that somebody had been researching a method to turn human ashes (post-cremation) into diamonds. anyone know about this?

they already grow diamonds in labs. the rpoblem is not that they fakes are flawed but that they are too perfect. und a microscope natural diamonds have different lines or something like that than senthetic. although the fakes are better diamonds they are still cheaper simple because it does not take millions of years to make them.

These diamonds are also supposed to do something neat for the computer industry or something? Perhaps someone could explain this to me. How are they gonna incorporate these gems into computer technology?

The whole thing is from this article.

Basically, diamond is better than silicon for the substrate in making semiconductor chips. The problem, up until now, is that diamond is much too expensive to use for something like that. But if there's a new process to produce diamond in quantity cheaply, then these new processes can be more seriously researched, and should result in some significant advances in semiconductors. Who knows - your next PC may have a CPU built on a wafer of diamond?

Does the Russian guy's quote in this paragraph seem funny as hell to you guys?

"But there were two immediate problems. First, nobody in the US knew how to run them. Clarke solved that by moving a crew of Russians to Florida. ("I felt myself all the time in a sauna," remembers Nickolay Patrin, who now lives full-time in Sarasota.) The second and more fundamental obstacle was that the Russians themselves had not yet mastered the process. In fact, the machines did not reliably produce diamonds."

I never understood people's obcession with jewelery. It's just fucking retarded.Wow, I think I'm going to waste a million dollars on a little shiny object that doesn't do shit. "It took millions of years to make".Big fuckin' deal,so did that piece of coal.

I don't think these synthetic diamonds will catch on in the jewelery business as someone else allready stated, but it'll work wonders for technological uses.

I think they will definitely take a huge chunk out of the diamond jewelry business, especially under one carat.

Hmmm, Aren't cubic zarconias are already perfect diamonds grown at a fraction of the cost. I was under the impression that REAL diamonds have tiny imperfections and this is how you can tell them apart. They'll find some way to tell the fake ones apart from the real ones anyway. This won't do shit to the real diamond market.
