1.7 billion cubic kilometre diamond found
    #2368039 - 02/22/04 03:25 PM (14 years, 28 days ago)

The biggest ever diamond has been found floating in space. The gem, estimated at close to 10 billion trillion trillion carats, is at the core of a dead star (BPM 37093) - a crystallised white dwarf.

The newly-discovered diamond in the sky is a whopping great chunk of crystallised carbon 50 light-years from the Earth in the constellation Centaurus. It is 2,500 miles across (the moon is approximately 2,200 miles across) and weighs 5 million trillion trillion pounds. It has been dubbed "Lucy" in reference to the Beatles' song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Diamond specialists told the research team that if nothing else, the diamond was much too big to wear*.

Theorists have long speculated that the cores of extinct white dwarves would crystallise, but until now have had no way to prove it. However, the white dwarf is not only radiant but also harmonious. It rings like a gigantic gong, undergoing constant pulsations.

"By measuring those pulsations, we were able to study the hidden interior of the white dwarf, just like seismograph measurements of earthquakes allow geologists to study the interior of the Earth. We figured out that the carbon interior of this white dwarf has solidified to form the galaxy's largest diamond," explained Travis Metcalfe, head of the team at Harvard Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics.

Our own Sun will become a white dwarf when it dies 5 billion years from now, having first expanded to engulf almost everything in the solar system. Two billion years after that, the core will crystallise, leaving a giant diamond in its place.

I think that totally depends on the market. Those Debeers assholes are hoarding the diamonds and tricking the public that diamonds are worth that much. They're just rocks, and you can use them in drill bits and semiconductors. They aren't rare at all. I think someone should mine it, and then flood the market with diamonds, collapsing debeers.

a diamond that size would make all diamonds on the earth worthless in a second if it was dragged down here. so its  just a worthless shiny rock in space hehe

it weights 5 trillion trillion pounds

Hmmm... You think in all the vastness of the universe, theres a giant LSD crystal floating around somewhere?  :nut:

It would be easier to move the earth into orbit around it.

Actually, it's very easy to isolate a super producing sclerotia strain.

Follow the strain isolation technique on Let's Grow Mushrooms, and then select sectors early which are brown in color.  By the second or third transfer, you'll see stones developing, and this is only about 1 month after the original swipe of spores on agar.

Now, take each stone and move it to a new dish.  Soon, the mycelium will grow out and you'll see fresh stones developing, and if they're good strains, the sclerotia is forming long before the mycelium reaches the edge of the plate.  Pick strains which form four or five stones within two weeks and use these for your grain masters. -- RR

well if it started raining acid crystals... well, the government couldnt arrest anyone!

I wonder what that would look like, a huge ass diamond, with light being shot through it, that big. Thats for the universes biggest "diamond" diggin biotch .

Or maybe some deity plans to give it to their wife

what kind of geh commercials is zales or whatever going to make about this.

This is ridiculous, scientists cant even describe our own planets inner area or core (at least with only *presumed* accuracy) and theyre saying theyve detected the core of a distant white dwarf and identified it as a diamond? Excuse me while I laugh like an idiot for a minute...
