Dude its friggin entertaining. The reaction releases a good amount of heat and LOADS of oxygen. So heat acting on the plastic coupled to the immense pressure expands the bottle to several times its original volume. From the side it looks white and very smooth then it explodes releasing a white cloud with dark violet and/or brownish streaks from the oxidized permanganate.


This type of soda bottle bomb thing works with any substance that produces a gas. The safest, in terms of chemical shrapnel is dry ice and a small amount of water. There is no heat, so the bottle stays pretty much intact until the moment it fails catastrophically. I think most bottles will pressurize to well over 100psi before they burst.

The next safest technique is probably strips of zinc or aluminum with vinegar. It would probably take hours to generate enough hydrogen to burst the bottle and it does get warmer.

I have a video ill have to upload to YouTube of my trying to safely burst a soda bottle that I was using to ferment a sugar solution. I left the cap on too tightly and it got too pressurized to safely try to loosen it.

As for hydrogen peroxide, ohcrapitsnico is correct, peroxides are very bad for you. Your blood has enzymes called peroxidases that are there to rapidly destroy peroxides. This does provide an option to decompose hydrogen peroxide that doesn't involve using permanganate. Just put the peroxide in the bottle and poke a hole in your finger and put a few drops of blood into the peroxide and watch what happens. I believe there are in the field forensic tests that use peroxide to detect blood, as real blood will cause the peroxide to bubble vigorously. Of course, other things break down peroxide as well, especially silver and platinum.

On more thing about drinking peroxide - you can induce vomiting in case of poisoning by drinking 3% hydrogen peroxide. Anything stronger will cause tissue damage to you esophagus and stomach lining.

*and to be clear, we are talking about using PLASTIC soda bottles. NOT GLASS. Using a glass bottle in this manner is beyond stupid.

I think it would have to be LOADS of heat to have the described effect on a glass bottle. :lolsy:

Interesting stuff, I love learning from the Shroomery. I knew that human cells had special enzymes to deal with peroxides but I had no idea you could break down a bunch of peroxide with just a drop of blood. In my current class we've done a lot of work with the mechanisms of oxidizing agents like permanganate; peroxides have been touched upon but pretty briefly. They're involved in some pretty exotic reactions. If hydroxide and hydronium are water's bad-boy brothers, hydrogen peroxide is its evil twin locked in the attic.

I think it is nearly impossible to attain 100% H202. It would explode before you got to that point.

drinking 30% could be life threatening, IMO. It would probably require medical intervention to treat the damage to your esophagus.

You can put hydrogen peroxide directly in your ear, and let it sit there, to dissolve any built up ear wax and ear crud, then drain it out
It's actually the best possible way to really clean the inside of the ears, especially if you have an infection.
But not supposed to do that if you have broken ear drums. Don't ever drink it.

Liver damage from hydrogen peroxide is unlikely, unless you cut a hole in your abdomen and poured it directly on the liver. There is no way the peroxide would be able to make it as far as your liver without completely being decomposed.

You're right, liver damage is unlikely, more likely would be severe vomiting, bleeding or burning of the throat and stomach and/or gangrene at high concentrations.

Here's another fun thing to do with hydrogen peroxide, you also need KI, a detergent and some food colouring to make it look nice. Making elephants toothpaste a much better use for it than drinking

Interesting. Not sure the mechanism, since KI reduces peroxide without releasing oxygen - the KI is oxidized to elemental iodine.

I was chatting with someone today who was talking about oscillating reactions, and it seems that H2O2 is almost always employed in these reactions. Here's an example:



If he can break away from his studying for a few minutes, maybe he can explain how this works.

The iodide ion is oxidized by the H2O2 to iodide, the the oxygen adds to hydronium ion to produce liquid water. There is no evolution of oxygen.

The Potassium ion is left to react with water to produce hydroxide ions.

Maybe this equation only works if there are excess hydronium ions, ie acidic solution.

To the people who mentioned 30% peroxide, where would you buy this? A drugstore? The ones here only seem to have 3%.

Here's the mechanism, the iodine acts as the catalyst as it cycles from I- to IO-

H2O2 + I-  ->  H2O + IO-

IO- + H2O2  ->  H2O + O2 + I-

That oscillating reaction looks amazing, might run that some day I'm at a loose end.

And 30% H2O2, from Sigma :shrug: . . . edit: It's probably available on everyones favourite auction site too

Yeah, I'm wondering if all those posts aren't really talking about 3%, the only strength I've ever seen. Judging just from the potency of the 3% solution I can't imagine what a 30% solution would do to your skin. :whoa:
