lonesome crowded west is the best.

i find if i listen to modest mouse for too long (regularly over a long period of time) it gets me all melancholy. its really good music but its so cynical.

listen to built to spill, they were isaac brock's main influence. the more i listen to them, the better they get, plus they have many more upbeat songs.


i' just started listening to dinosaur JR, apparently one of build to spills biggest influence, but the shroomery browser started doing the harlem shake, and i gotta finish this post before it will go away.

anyway yeah, MM fans, look into

Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr, The New Year, Sunny Day Real Estate, all worth looking into.
And arguably all better than MM.

I think Building Nothing Out of Something is probably my favorite. But lonesome crowded west and moon are both excellent too.
All the above listed bands are good, but I like modest mouse better. Built to spill is a close second.

Also capn jazz sounds closer to mm than any of those bands. Also really good.

Certain Modest Mouse songs bring back strong memories of particular moments in my life. The top 4 are:

Gravity Rides Everything: Instant mood up lifter. Reminds me of sunny carefree days.

Night on The Sun: Probably my favorite all around modest mouse song. At first it starts dark and kind of intimidating, then about 2/3 of the way through the song completely changes and becomes something else, almost dream like. It reminds me of opiates, and I love opiates.

Interstate 8: I am convinced it is about tripping, and it just feels melancholy. It's a good feeling on occasion

Wild Pack of Family Dogs: This song is just fun and has a deep meaning that I like to listen to. Also, dat accordion

modest mouse was the first "different" band I've ever listened to. I normally would listen to the top hits, but then my brother showed me them and that's when I started diversifying my musical taste.

Been listening to them since the 4th grade

I actually hated them when I first heard them. It was right after the good news album came out. I hated it, thought it was all just sold out blabber with decent music in the background.


After I heard the old albums, however, MM became one of my favorites.


People say they suck live, been every time I've seen them, they killed it.

It's not like isaac brock is a talented singer or anything, it's the rawness and distinctiveness of his voice that draws people to their music.

Try listening to one of issac's interviews, his lisp is annoying as hell to listen to.
