Brother might have serious mental illness
    #17989235 -

My brother is showing signs of having a serious mental illness and my parents first reaction is to drive 10 hours to take him to a preacher rather than get him real help. :facepalm3:

Shouldn't you be praying yourself? Everybody knows that the only way to heal the soul and mind is through prayer.

It was just a little sarcasm to brighten your day. In all seriousness if your brother is underage and your parents sadly think that is the correct method of treatment idk if there's much you can do. Of course if your brother is not underage then maybe take this topic up with him.

He's not underage, but he'll go if they tell him to. He doesn't want to seek other methods of help because he's afraid he wont be able to own any guns, and guns are pretty much the only thing that make him happy.:feelsbadman:

That is a pretty shitty situation. I have no idea what to tell you man doesn't want treatment no one can force him. I'm not 100% sure also but i don't think having a mental illness completly disqualifys you to own a gun I thought it was the "violently mental ill" people with history of suicide attempts or other harm towards other people and what not.

I actually just looked it up the only people barred form owning a weapon is if they were involuntarily committed for mental health reasons. So even your brother seeking treatment for whatever he has shouldn't keep him from his guns.

yet...but with the way things are going, every single firearm owner will have to commit to a government mental health screening, and personal background check from birth.  My friend was denied his right to own a firearm due to the fact that he had a non violent misdameanor at the age of 13. Your friend should get a lawyer, that is illegal barring him from owning a gun for a misdemeanor(with the exception of domestic violence). I had six felonies as a juvenile, and I own a ton of guns, your buddy should sue the state he lives in for violating his rights.

there are tons of different mental health illnesses, and not all of them make you spontaneously violent. my advice would to just keep a close eye on him for a while. advise him to do personal research on it himself, this can help influence him to making decisions on it himself rather than being told to do something he may not feel comfortable with.

Well, he's depressed and showing signs of having a schizophrenic type illness. However, he's not violent at all and literally the nicest person I know. I'm not worried about him going on a killing rampage. Though I am  worried he might harm himself, but he could easily do that without a gun.

What worries me is my parents seem to be in denial that he has a mental illness, and that their influence will keep him from seeking psychiatric help.(Though I've been talking to him a lot and I think I've convinced him to set up an appointment) I actually suspect both of my parents suffer from a mental illness as well.  Both have VERY crazy parents, and suffered terrible abuse as children.

Fuck, it doesn't  bode well for my future mental health...

The fact that you can recognize it, and you are already looking at yourself is good...alot of these illnesses are hereditary, but your not guranteed to get that gene...and schizophrenia is a very dangerous illness, to himself and others around him..Deffinately needs to go see someone.  When he goes to the appt, ask him if you can come with him..sometimes it helps to have trusted friend with you, instead of getting the feeling hes alone, (Which leads to defensive thinking and depression)

So you think schizophrenics should be able to own as many guns as they want? lol because they are such stable individuals.

OP if you are really worried then talk to your parents and get him some REAL help. Going to church isn't going to solve anything and neither is posting on a forum

Families like OP I wish we could send to a deserted island because their blatant stupidity is what gets innocent people killed. Any helpful advice just a waste of time because clearly this family of idiots places very little value in any common sense.
