Yeah really, religion helps keep alot of people in line. Granted it causes war and hate but to a large number of people that is all they live for. They go through the motions of life hoping to be rewarded in the next. It gives people a reason to get up.

Not necessarily... I didn't say give up religion and turn to just science. What I mean is people need to stop looking to other things/people for the answers of questions that can only be answered by yourself.

Science isn't a religion pris. It's a current model of understanding based on evidence and peer reviewed research. Good science has no bias and I guarantee you any good scientist is less confident in his "beliefs" than most religious people because they understand the necessity to evolve our understanding of things as we learn more about them. It's not an opinion, it's a grounded search for understanding.

Science gave us nuclear energy. Opinions gave us nuclear bombs. Science gives us cures for paralysis. Opinions keep people in wheel chairs. Science discovered a universe outside our own. Opinions are the reason we've barely explored it.

So yeah, there's a difference.

Youre right here though. Religion doesn't cause problems, tenacity does. The two are often correlated because religion tends to be a breeding ground for dull sheep who follow the "monkey see monkey do" mentality. But of course you find that elsewhere in politics and culture. Doesn't mean we can blame those things, only the people at fault.

That being said I still think the world would be better off without highly opinionated social structures like religion. Things like this have slowed scientific progress and technology so much it makes me mad. I'm not against spirituality, but religion is highly impersonal and limits the creative and productive potential of individuals IMO. And it's influence really goes much further than it should. Not just in the realm of science.

Um, please explain what part of the model is fucked? Science is still science. There are always going to be fuckers in the system, but I can't imagine our technology has progressed so far even in the past ten years on faulty science
