What ARE these purple goo-balls?

These purple goo balls were found in the desert in Arizona. No one knows exactly what it is. It could be some sort of fungus or mold, and i have also read something about someone once leaving those scented small jelly balls outside which resulted in them getting rained on and swelling up. Of course everyone wants to blame aliens but... what do you think it is?
Also... i apologize in advance if this could have been posted in a more suitable forum.

And couldn't some science guy just test the stuff to see what it's made of, or is it just not worth it and this story is getting too much reaction? It seems like they have sort of gotten over it by now.

Someone might be doing an experiment with them.  Or someone broke open a bag of dehydrated ones, rain happens and they soak up shittons of water.  THey look polymer based.
