one question though...
if the rock blew up 20 miles above the city due to its own pressure, then what/how did it cause that hole in the frozen lake?

Well, blew up as in broke into mostly dust with some larger chunks. The cloud lingering in the air probably accounts for most of the asteroids mass. If you watch the videos of the main shockwave hitting, there are a series of maybe a dozen bangs that sound like gunshots. Those are the shock waves made by the larger pieces that survived the initial breakup. Those also broke up into smaller pieces, but there were definitely a few basketball or larger sized pieces that made it to the ground.

It weighed 10 tons and was traveling something ridiculous like 18 times the speed of sound.

Gumby is way off. It was going about 40,000 miles per hour, so 60 times the speed of sound.

I heard the meteorite that hit Russia was unrelated to the one that blew up.  Speaking of ones blowing up in the air, I was eating lunch in my office once, in a company in el paso, and there was this huge explosion, the building shaking, and a flash of light through the window.  I assumed it was a really big sonic boom, but I mean, this think rocked the building.  Then I assumed it was a military shot from white sands being blown up in the atmosphere.  Then on the news that night they said the explosion was a meteor that blew up in the atmosphere.

Quote:
On Thursday, October 9, 1997, at around 12:50 pm, a series of sonic booms were heard and a fireball was seen by many people in El Paso,Texas and surrounding areas. Many scientist believe a meteorite fell through the sky over west Texas and southern New Mexico. The above figure is what you heard, as recorded at the Kidd Seismic Observatory on a broadband digital seismometer. It is a seismic recording of the sonic boom from the meteor.
The top trace shows vertical displacement, the middle trace show north-south horizontal displacement, and the bottom trace shows east-west horizontal displacement. The horizontal axis is time (seconds), the vertical axis is amplitude. The record start at 18:49:08 GMT (01:49:08 pm local time). The sonic boom starts about 23 seconds into the display.
