The larger piece probably just had some smaller ones break off yesterday, or a thousand, or a million or a billion years ago.


Still carrying roughly the same trajectory after all this time  because of a lack of friction in space.


if they ARE related though, i'd have to guess that the piece broke off not that long ago (not that long ago in the cosmic sense, lol)

because givin enough time, even a slightly altered flight trajectory would DRASTICALLY change its distance from the larger object by the time it got to earth.

The meteor disintegrated due to its own pressure wave about 20 miles above the surface. All of the damage on the ground was due to this shock wave propagating to the ground.

It was equivalent to a 300 kiloton nuclear bomb (15 times that of Hiroshima)  going off 20 miles above a city — minus the radiation.
