Beautiful peruvianoid (??) * 1
    #17806704 -

Drove by this plant today on my way to work. I may ask the owner if i can take a small cutting, but before that i was wondering if any of you experts on here can speculate about its id?

Thanks for the help!

The photo is not very detailed, but peruvianoid or cuzcoensis is likely. Very nice cactus!

Try to get a closer picture but I would say that's a T. bridgesii.

That also came to mind, but it looks kinda fat for bridgesii. And from what can be seen on the photos, the areole structure is more consistent with cuzco. But you could very well be right, better pictures are needed to be sure! :super:

Ive seen bridgesii's get pretty damn fat. We call mine grand daddy log leg, because hes almost the size of my juuls.

My guess is its Peruvian or Cuzco, Taste the juice!

What about it says "definitely bridgesii"? I'm not doubting, I'm just trying to learn more.

Length of spines + low spine count for a start

Not to mention the rather distinctive epidermis which is what really seals it for me. You occasionally see specimens with low spine count and overall morphology that look somewhat similar to the one pictured which are more peruvianoid in nature, but they don't have they don't have the rough bridgesii epidermis like this one and they tend to be more blue.

Also:  Check the spacing between the areoles.  If you compare it to some pictures, the spacing is further apart than you would expect from a peruvianus or cuzco.

the first thought i had was bridgesii, but i never trust myself with an ID.  it all still seems like some mild cluster fuck, good to see i may be getting it right

I can tell it's a bridgesiioid through the epidermis colour, areole distance, number of spines(3-5 usually), spine length and colour. Should be honey coloured for bridgesii and not thick at the bases. Some forms of bridgesii can exhibit thickened spine bases but this is not one. I've also seen mature specimens in real life. Mature specimens grown in ground and not in containers can look a lot different to the usual nursery/container grown plants we usually get dished up to id here in the EG.

If one were to take a cutting from this specimen and grow it, the new growth would be thinner, epidermis colour would differ(probably be more blue) and spines wouldn't be as gnarly. The features of the cactus pictured have been achieved by years of being exposed to the elements and time in the ground.

I cant see how people see this to be anything else but a Trichocereus Bridgesii. Its the classic Bridgesii in every way.

Definitely get some cuttings

So I ended up getting some cuttings (the owner was a nice guy), which brings up a couple questions. One of the pieces had fallen off and was laying on the ground. I had to cut rot off the bottom but luckily it hadn't spread. On the top there was also a hole with black mold that I decided I should cut out. Now the cutting looks like this:

Will it heal and continue growing from the top or should I cut the whole top off and let it grow pups?

Thanks for your help again yall.
Heres a photo of the two cuttings. Really looking forward to getting them in the ground!

I would just leave it. Maybe treat it and the base with some sulfur. Make sure to let the base callous well before planting it too. I think the top will grow just fine, but I bet the stress of the cut will make it pup somewhere near that area.

It should continue as normal. The apical meristem is still intact.
