The Crusaders sacked Byzantium as well, and other Eastern Christians. It wasn't about Christianity and Islam at all, it was about Europeans going on a looting-raping-pillaging frenzy.

Both the Muslims and Christians wanted the land. Jerusalem was considered holy to both sects.
The Muslim leaders taxed Christians for coming to the Holy Land. They used the site as a way to make themselves wealthier which inevitably led to another Crusade attack.

Any history scholars want to help elaborate on specific details?

Politically motivated, land grabs, Catholicism was used to manipulate these knights and turn them into savages. They annihilated everything with a head, one of the world's worst events.

muslim turks invaded byzantium and after their empire crumbled, byzantium seized the opportunity to regain their lands. so, they sent a plea to rome for help and urban II made this lovely speech that started the whole thing. the church framed muslims as "enemies of god" to sell the war, but it was about power, land and spoils. prior to this time in what's now spain, christians, jews and muslims all worked and learned together in schools at the height of the islamic renaissance.
