That's digging way back for me, a European history major but I associate the idea of the crusades with reconquista. It was as much political and territorial as it was religious. Crusaders were there attempting to take back territory that was previously held by Christians.  But I wouldn't underestate the impact religious zeal had on geopolitical pograms.

its really just a question of primacy

christianity came first

Islam was the final

they clashed heads

it hasn't resolved yet

the differences between christianity and islam are too broad to actually detail here... so i'm gonna deal with the second question "what led to the crusades"

Well, honestly, it had NOTHING to do with religion and EVERYTHING to do with politics... at the time the catholic church was collecting taxes in the form of a tithe on income from every catholic nation. now at the same time you had many land hungry lords who had been fed tales of conquest and war from their great great grandfathers time just itching for battle, so they started fighting eachother. well wars cost money, which means that the more the "christian" nations fight each other the more they spend on the wars and the less money the church made less money in "donations"

and so they chose an enemy, the Muslims, because they where a convenient target since they held Jerusalem at the time (quite successfully I might add since Jerusalem was one of the major trade hubs of the area and trade only went down after the cursades... yes that was intentional.

and so the church declared a holy war, promised full pardon for any and all sins (which the church became suddenly reluctant to give out in any other ways at that point in time) all of a sudden instead of christian nations fighing each other and having to spend money on both offense and defense they where only spending money on the offensive and the church could "accept donations" for "holy blessings" on the remainder. not to mention the large quantities of loot that was brought back from the one or two successful crusades (the holy roman empire benefited MASSIVELY from that for the first two crusades at least... until the third crusade looted them on their way :p )

Well said. If you remember, the Ottoman Empire reached as far as Vienna Austria at its high point. The ottomans sacked Vienna (twice???). But were never able to take hold of it.  That put ottoman Muslims in control of a considerable portion of Christian Eastern Europe.  Ya think that sits well with The papacy?  No.  Think of the Soviet Union. Western Europe and the americans were convinced the Soviet Union was going to take over all of Europe.  The crusades were an attempt to extract tithing yes, but they were also to prevent then spread of Islam. The religious undertones are apparent but it wasn't really religious war per se.  The ottomans enslaved Christians and made them their bitch, redistributed their land, and took their resources...

Politics bro. It rules all... :super:

yeah there was no specific religious issue that was the catalyst for the crusades, beyond:

-they're mohamedan heretics
-they control the "holy land"
-we want the "holy land"
-there are lots of valuable territories that lie between that have shit worth conquering and looting

If I was some piss poor peasant back then I would have joined a crusade.

chances are you're gonna die young anyway.  what was the average age  they lived like 30 or something?

it's the only way you're ever going to get to travel away from your small town, see the world,  maybe make a little cash to support yourself.

and if killing muslims for the church gets you good with God,  excellent bonus.

I figure they recruited peasants for the majority of the army,  like just about every other army in history.

I bullshit my way through 12 years of catholic school, I can pass as a believer

No.  That is a trick of statistics. Infant mortality rate was very high. So if you take a raw average of the age of death the number is something around 30.  But that is not an accurate representation of how long people actually lived.  People lived into old age. The exact average age varies by region and the time you are talking about. If, for instance, there was an outbreak of plague or famine the average age of death varies.

Because they believed they were soldiers of God and God's children were being persecuted by the Muslim extremists.  Sound familiar maybe?

the sacking of byzantium is a rather interesting chapter in the crusades.

the first crusade was declared partly as a response to the pleas of the eastern roman (or byzantine) emperor, whose territories were being encroached upon by the turkish seljuk empire. despite the roman catholics history of differences with the eastern orthodox church, the justification for the beginning of the crusades was to defend fellow christians from muslim conquest and fight for free access by christians to the holy land for pilgrimage. however, by the fourth crusade about a hundred years later, the byzantine capital of constantinople was sacked and looted mercilessly by crusaders themselves.

ironnnnny
