Normal cd-r capacity is 700MB/80minutes of audio. The bitrate of CD audio is 1411,2 kbit/s meaning a full 80 minutes of audio equals around 826 MB of data. How is this possible, is there something I don't know?? Or do I just suck at maths?

I thought they usually said 74 minutes for the 700 MB discs, by my figuring that would work out to 764 MB. There is some kind of weird voodoo going on with it though I believe, same with video CDs. For some reason it seems like it can store more data if it's not a data CD.

You are doing it wrong.

You are ripping CD's in FLAC which causes more but no quality is lost during ripping.

You should be ripping using mp3 or another format.

Original copies of CD's do not use FLAC. FLAC exists because quality is lost in ripping/burning and that format just prevents that but takes up more space doing so.

Maybe he downloaded the flac files from somewhere. Hard to tell exactly what the problem he encountered was though, he gave a pretty vague description of the situation.

Which is why it's smart to rip to FLAC.

Are you arguing that mp3 is native CD then? Try explaining that to the Philips engineers who developed the CD in the early 1980s. I'm sore they'll listen very intently to what you have to say

More than mp3. Much less than uncompressed CD audio.

To be fair, the original post itself is pretty nonsensical.

Well, I know two things:

CD audio (CDDA) is a semi-analog format.

You can burn more than is indicated on a CD-R. It's called overburning.

Why not just use WAV?

Uncompressed WAV is about 10Mbyte/minute; FLAC tends to be a bit more efficient in terms of disk space. Otherwise nobody would have bothered to develop any of the compression algorithms and we would have simply stuck with WAV back in the 1990s

I guess you can say that all cd/dvd/bd-s are "semi-analog" by nature.

You burn the data onto the disk, creating physical tracks of zeros and ones. By principle it's not very different from the grooves on vinyl - a true analog format.

And as for DVDs the ones you can buy in stores are known as DVD-5 for roughly 5 gigs, more like 4.7 gigs in practice, while the DVDs that movies come on are known as DVD-9 for you guessed it...  DVD-9s are generally only available to movie and media distributors and not simpleton consumers.

I believe there's a company that retails DVD-R's that should be playable by non-modded PS2's, but I'm not entirely sure. Anyway, you're right - it's off-topic.

has anyone in this thread mentioned the difference between a disk meant for mp3 and photo and file that's 700 mb vs a disk meant for dvd that's 2.7 gb? Not sure this has anything to actually do with the solution. Oh well

Try burning the same songs in both flac and mp3 then. See which takes up more space.

You believe that MP3 is the closest thing to CDDA audio. You are completely wrong. WAV is the closest thing to CDDA audio. WAV is "standard" audio.* FLAC is the exact same quality as WAV & CDDA, only it is smaller. This is accomplished via advanced mathematical algorithms. FLAC can be decompressed to the original WAV binary, in fact, every time you play the FLAc file, it is decompressed before being played. MP3 is a lot smaller than WAV & CDDA, but it changes the integrity of the audio information.

Biggest                Smaller                          Smallest

CDDA & WAV      FLAC, WavPack, APE, SHN...          MP3, M4A, WMA

The "biggest" formats are simply uncompressed, the "smaller" formats are compressed but are lossless and the "smallest" formats are compressed and lossy. MP3 is totally alien to a CD.

*Windows tunes and beeps are in WAV format because if they were in MP3 format they would be less pure and since they represent the device that is your computer, it makes sense to use the most pure format.

Did you even read my first post? If anything, I am implying that FLAC files are closer to CD and CD quality. It's one of the closest you will get to having no loss in quality.

I'm suggesting MP3 (or WMA actually) if he is having trouble making copies or generally fitting all songs on a 700mb disc.

FLAC isn't just close to lossless, it's completely lossless. That's what the L in the name stands for. It's equivalent to putting a wav file into a zip archive or something, the file becomes smaller but you're not losing any data whatsoever.

People are getting mixed up though because nobody really knows WTF the OP was trying to do. Was he burning an audio CD or a data cd with these flac files? Nobody knows.
