Therevada and Mahayana Buddhism
    #17495699 -

"- Both accept Sakyamuni Buddha as the Teacher.
- The Four Noble Truths are exactly the same in both schools.
- The Eightfold Path is exactly the same in both schools.
- The Paticca-samuppada or the Dependent Origination is the same in both schools.
- Both rejected the idea of a supreme being who created and governed this world.
- Both accept Anicca, Dukkha, Anatta and Sila, Samadhi, Panna without any difference."

Now, the main difference being :

Therevada = "Main emphasis is self liberation. There is total reliance on oneself to eradicate all defilements."

Mahayana = "Besides self liberation, it is important for Mahayana followers to help other sentient beings."

"Once Ananda asked the Buddha, 'People say the word Sunya. What is Sunya?' The Buddha replied, 'Ananda, there is no self, nor anything pertaining to self in this world. Therefore, the world is empty.'"

Theravada: samsara and nirvana are completely separate
Mahayana: samsara and nirvana are in union.

Also, theravada only uses teachings from siddartha, where as mahayana has teachings from all sorts of different guys. Theravada doesn't like this cause they say these mahayana teachers aren't buddhas, and they don't have to get their teachings from else where because they already have a historical buddha to base their lives off of. Theravadas also don't like the bodhisattva vow because they believe if you take it, you're enslaving yourself to samsara for an extremely long time (until all beings are free.)

How can I be happy in nirvana knowing that I am leaving everyone else behind. I think compassion leads to true happiness whether or not I am in samsara. I am still working on this compassion thing, but I think if I figure out how to be compassionate to myself then I will no longer be suffering. Maybe part of this self compassion is letting go of the need to save everyone before I can be happy. I will gladly accept that realization when I reach it, if I do. Until then, I plan to help others too. The nirvana separate from samsara is a self existence separate from god imo. Why be enlightened, if there is nobody to share it with. I kind of like other people. I love them. I love Shakti too. I think together I will be happy, and that happiness can be shared with the whole universe. This is really the left hand path vs the right hand path. Christianity and Satanism all over again. True love is what lets us make that choice.

I love both for what they suggest to me. Therevada suggests an effort towards being mindful of my personal doings. And Mahayana suggests that the path to enlightenment is a whole lot more likely to be achieved if we are trying to give a helping hand when others need it. After all, without compassion how would we even be discussing this?

Interesting White Beard. I am having trouble understanding how one could reach nirvana while simultaneously being stuck in the cycle of birth/death. Isn't the whole point of nirvana liberation from said cycle?

Kickle, I like how you boil it down. It's good soup. Compassion being a potent message, for your 'self' and for others.

Nirvana is of the realm of the wheel of birth, death and rebirth.

Nirvana is not the goal.  The goal is transcending Nirvana and the entire wheel.

Umm I thought Nirvana meant final transcendence. I've always seen it depicted off the wheel, as in the paintings where buddha is pointing to the moon:

But yeah, I've just heard that one of the big feuds between the maha and thera is that the thera say that nirvana is when you leave the wheel forever by eliminating the poisons, and maha, their idea of liberation is when you realize the wheel and nirvana are the same through the realization of emptiness.

Could you perhaps please explain the wheel? The only wheel I am familiar with in Buddhism is the wheel of sharp weapons, which appeared to me ( or what I believe it was ) in a dream.

Does the wheel simply represent birth/death/bardo/rebirth?

In the center hub of the wheel there is a boar, a snake, and a roaster all eating each other's tails and going around in a circle. These three animals represent the three poisons. Ignorance, hatred, and desire. I forget which one is which. Anyway, the 3 poisons perpetuate each other, as seen by them eating each others tails, and they keep the wheel of samsara spinning.

The next ring is a human going through all the stages of life and death I think.

The next area (the largest area) is the 6 realms of rebirth in samsara. Starting from the top, going clockwise we have the God realm, the jealous demigod realm, the hungry ghost realm, the hell realm, the animal realm, and the human realm.

The outer ring of the wheel I have no idea really.

And the thing that holds the wheel is Yama the lord of death. Thus death spins the wheel of life.

The Buddha is in the right hand top corner pointing to the moon (the finger that points to the moon) in the left hand corner for all the beings on the wheel. The moon represents enlightenment or Nirvana, and it is off the wheel.

You could say that the wheel represents birth, death, bardo, and rebirth, but also remember that the 6 realms can also explain our experiences as humans. Sometimes life is really shitty, and you're in the hell realm, sometimes everything is going your way so your in the God realm. When you're envious of your neighbors new sports car and his hot wife, then you're a jealous god, etc. etc.

Good explanation, White Beard.

And, Kupo, you are correct that the wheel simply refers to Birth/Death/Bardo/reBirth.

Honestly I find it rather humorous when people talk about all these difficult decisions they're facing in mysticism and spirituality.  I mean, really, it's gotta be tough to choose whether to seek liberation of yourself through hardcore meditation and devotion as a Buddha, or whether to postpone Nirvana until you've helped liberate all other sentient beings from the Wheel of Life as a Bodhisattva, or whether to confront the Demon Choronzon and rise above the Abyss as a Magister Templi following Love as the Law, Love under Will, or whether to throw off the confining chains of imprisoning morality and compassionate weakness to become a Brother of the Left Hand Path through a dark descent through the Qlippoth, or whether to seek guiding wisdom only from spiritual balance with the Tao te Ching as just a Humble Monk because you've got tons of positive karma merits you can't wait to spend in your next life as a badass spiritual being in the 5th density, or whether just to go for maximum pleasure here and now while you've still got a body and emulate the decadent role models of de Sade and other unabashed Hedonistic Satanists who'll obtain experiences your darkest desires have never even dreamed about, or whether to.... :blah:

Instead, I'd rather work on understanding my own basic human psychology than have a super duper fancy title with ridiculously big, impossible goals like eliminating all human suffering, transcending your puny human shell into an immortal omnipotent God, or being able to explode planets just by telepathic thought alone.  Not to mention having to barter worship and unconditional adoration for platitude-filled, dogmatic word vomit from your guru that all his followers consider to be the Gospel Truth.  :puke:

I'll admit though, if I were a 6th Dimensional Aquarian Space Wiccan I'd probably brag about it to people too.  The business cards alone would be dope.

Eh, I think it is your choice to view it as such :rockman:

I do want to see your business card when it's finished :rocket:

Edit: Also, do you think contemplating these things might lead to better understanding of your own psychology?

 Yeah, sure they can be helpful.  I was admittedly a little intoxicated when I wrote the former post and felt like Devil's Advocating it up.  :satansmoking:
