If you know what you're doing, buy your audio equipment used and a year or two old.  I probably saved two or 3k that way building my system.

That only works if you get lucky.  I've been looking around for used studio monitors and they are very difficult to find, especially the more popular/higher rated.

Debatable, I'd rather blow a donkey than have most speakers average people use.

Yes I watch a lot of movies.

Pick it, pack it, fire it up, come along and take a hit from the bong.

I've heard money doesn't buy happiness, well it sure pays the sadness debt!

So i need a new system! yes its just a few speakers but its an old system so i rather just get a new one. I'm looking for 4 speakers for surround sound, one big front speaker and a subwoofer(like 2 8inch diameter subs? idk much about speakers) for my room. I just want a good system with surround sound and heavy bass. What would be a good system? preferably under 600 but nothing more then 800. Thanks :mushroom2:

I would not want to be your neighbor lol

Is this for your computer or hooked up to an a/v reciever and your tv?

If your looking for proper surround sound, you definitely need a proper 5.1 channel system.

It sounds like you want something "thumping" for music with bass.

Music is best enjoyed in 2.1 channel(the .1 being the subwoofer).  Your front 2 "mains" are the bedrock of your system.

Surround, in my opinion, is only enjoyed properly with music with proper blu ray audio or sacd.

I don't know much about computer systems.  I imagine a person would be limited in choices by the specs of their soundcard.

If it's for home stereo, what amplifier are you using?

Depending on what you need, I can give you quite a few of good choices

I dunno.  In four months, I picked up several 1k+ pieces of equipment for half off or greater and it was absolutely mint, and some of it brand new.  Go over to the polk forums and there's (literally) hundreds of listings of high end 1k+ listings going for cheap.

Two days ago, someone sold a flagship Onkyo receiver that was over 2k in 2008.  They let it go for under $400.  IMO, those are the deals you look for.  I bought my Yamaha RXA2010 for $650.  It's still listed at $1600 on amazon.  Same with my Polk towers, they're "listed" at 1k and I got them for $600, still in the plastic/box.

For craigslist, I suppose its the area you live in, but online is definitely not short of great deals.

yep, internet is the way to go.

I picked up a Rotel RMB-1095:

Got it for $100 dollars of kijiji.  This person had new clue about stereo equipment.  I literally stole it at that price.

Yeah fair enough, I was thinking more in terms of kijiji, but that makes sense.  I do live in the biggest city in Canada though, and I don't find a ton of stuff on kijiji in terms of high quality audio equipment.
