That's funny you posted this. Today at my school's physics dept. was a guy who worked on the most recent rover project. It's pretty cool shit, I got to see the video of the thing landing. Anyways member of the audience asked him if there would be a pragmatic reason to send a humans out there and he said no. Mainly because as of right now the cost to do that would be extremely high (even compared to the already high price it took to get this one there).

Second, our current rover, and the rover for the 2020 mars project are both 'space junk' in the sense that they have no way of returning to earth after landing on mars.

Mars is extremely inhospitable... By the time we have the technology to achieve what the OP is rambling about we will all be gone.

Ya I didn't watch the vid when I said that.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see if it really comes to fruition. The video makes it sound like everything is already set in stone, and its not like that at all. I honestly just think people underestimate how difficult it would be to live there.

For example, there is no surface water, it gets down to -137F at night, there are no soures of food or anything. Too keep them alive we would just have to keep sending them shit for a long time... again that's not cheap either.

Still pretty cool though... I don't mean to burst the bubble, I was just talking with my prof about this so I thot id share.

If I had the chance, I would totally go :rockon:

what about living underground? there may be some crazy shit down there. then again, we have this option for various moons/planets, not only Mars.

Well, to live underground would necessitate a surface presence. Even if you were on earth, you couldnt just go live underground (short of find some massive caves, which idk if mars has any, it could)you would need to start drilling on the surface. This would just add to the already long list of things you need to send out there.

But, I agree, living underground would be warmer... its closer to the planets core. Also, there are theories that suggest (weak evidence tho) that CH4 (methane) comes out from below the surface of mars (like on earth). This is a sign of some kind of organic life, so who knows.

But, in all reality, mars is the only option. If we were to do this, it has to be mars really. It takes about 8 months of space travel to get there, and the next closest planet is venus, which is just clouds of gas and shit. Mercury and Jupiter are next, and mercury is hot as fuck and jupiter's raging storms would destroy any object entering its atmosphere...
