when i was anal about not cracking tubs,

i would have a drill in one hand, and a hair dryer in the other.

lol works like a charm, you wont crack a single hole.

My first couple tubs were perfect.  Holes were EXACTLY 2" on center.  I had a couple cracks, but I welded them back together.  Now, my tubs have many cracks, and I too dgaf.

Cracks don't hurt unless there's so many the thing breaks.  As said above, use heat to avoid cracking if you're using a cheap hardware store drill bit.

That aquarium is a bit small to be of much use.  It will be hard to get enough fresh air.  The pump probably won't cut it so just drill holes and fan now and then.  use an external light, not the one in the lid as it will create too much heat.

By "much use" do you mean yield? To me it just seems like it would be an over-sized soda bottle tek. I only plan on fruiting one cake in there, but I'm sure you read and know that so that is why I don't get what you are getting at.

Temp tested the aquarium after 1 hour of the built in lamp being on and it maintained room temperature of 72F. I still have yet to drill holes into it, but I doubt that will affect it. I'm psyched :grin:

All I know is it is incandescent. There are markings that appear to indicate 120v 5w but I can't really tell because this is a pretty old aquarium that has seen some decent use.

My spore syringe is on the way and I'm making preps for inoculation! So psyched! I've decided to go with golden teachers as my first from the Hawkseye
For my SAB, I'm thinking about making a hole just big enough for the syringe so I can flame the tip without removing my arms and stirring up air. Is this a good idea? I can't seem to think of any repercussions of such a small hole (1in diameter). I mean the arm holes are way bigger, and I would think moving my arms in and out would cause way more of a disturbance. I'm going to replicate RR lets grow mushrooms glovebox to a T aside from the syringe flaming hole

Needle hole is unnecessary. Are you gonna build a little shelf by the hole to hold your flame? Just be diligent.

Well I know it is unnecessary, but if it decreases contamination chances it's worth it. Something about those giant holes just seems to conflict with the point of a contam free zone lol

You point is well reasoned.

By unnecessary, I mean it will not decrease your chances of contamination.
Bringing your hands in and out does not create the disturbance you may think

People do all kids of delicate operations in a SAB.

I will digress and not hinder your project.

Get a big (about 105qt), CLEAR tub.  Cut two 4" holes where you think they would be comfortable for your arms.  Some people put one on the front and one on the side.  I have both of mine on the front.  One slightly higher than the other.  Buy a bunch of nitrile gloves and a tyvek painter's suit and cut off the arms and legs to use as sleeves (cut up the rest of the suit to use for lid filters).

Cheap and easy (like a fat chick).

Organic Brown Rice I will grind up in my coffee grinder. It says low fat, low sodium, and gluten free... hopefully that won't be a problem
