Let me help ya with that....  Mind you, an i5-2550k can be obtained for $215, so we're talking a $25 difference

Ya that's because Intel's are better. AMDs are ok for the money. But I've said it 500 times, the current Intel chips just outperform the fuck out of AMD's offerings. And not just in games, pretty much across the board. Not saying AMD totally sucks, but it's certainly not the fastest chip in the world because someone got a 8GHz clock is all I'm saying, clock speeds are definitely not everything. You want the best chip in the world right now I'm fairly sure that's the 3960X.

Of course that's $1000. But as CJ just mentioned... a 2500k is about $215 and will outperform that chip pretty significantly, even on air.

When you start getting into EXTREME cooling (liquid helium, liquid nitrogen) and going for world record benchmarks, the Intel chips always come out ahead, that's why the benchmark leaderboards are completely dominated by Intel chips.

At least AMD is doing better in the GPU market. The 7970s trade blows with the GTX 680s in a lot of benchmarks, although 680s do seem to have the edge there as well.

3960X def. takes the cake for gaming cpus, but Sandy Bridge Xeons are far superior for something like video editing  (and destroy benchmarks like Geekbench, thinking the record is something like 80k now where my OC'd 2600k is something like 16k)... so often the "fastest cpu" comes down to fastest at what.  Either way it's Intel though :wink:

This is very true. Those Xeons are beastmode for multi-threaded apps and video editing/rendering.

What is your opinion on the Ivy Bridge processors compared to the Sandy Bridge? I've been struggling to figure out why it costs more for the 32nm architecture than the 22nm. I'd be inclined to take the 22nm and run, all else being equal.

Newer technologies in the Ivy Bridge
Ivy bridge CPUs are about 5% more powerful than a sandy bridge at the same clocks, and are a bit more power efficient.
But Ivy Bridge CPUs also don't seem to OC as well as the Sandy Bridge

As for the pricing,,,, no idea

i've heard they used cheap thermal paste between the integrated heat spreader and the processor die, so that's why the temps suck compared to the sandy bridge ones, which used soldering with a much higher thermal conductivity...

some brave people take a razor blade to their IHS to reapply

That makes sense. I suspected it was along the lines just using the 22 nm architecture to conserve power for some reason that escapes me rather than to pack in more transistors for the same size and power consumption. What you said explains it perfectly.

Taking a razor blade to under the heatspreader?... :shudder:....

I'm very very happy with my 2500k. And I got it used for about $70, 2 weeks old.
Been running stable @ 4.5GHz for over a year, it's on 24/7. Temps average around 35c idle, 45-50 under load with an H60.
I have gotten it stable at 5GHz, but I had to bump up voltages a bit and I wasn't comfortable with the temps for long term

Yah, really is only the summer months holding me back from running higher than 4.5ghz, my temps are excellent atm, but when August/Sept. rolls around I def. don't want to see them go any higher.  4.5ghz is a happy place to be though, all you really seem to get is some geek cred for pushing further.
