Pac Northers we gotta do a serious rain dance
    #1721262 - 07/16/03 10:48 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Well we are getting raped again and its dry as a bone out there just like last summer. So in the spirit of letting our good mycelia get a good proper vegetative period in before the temps drop we gotta pray for rain. Either that or we should start a new club known as the "wandering woodchip watering fools" we could put large water tanks on our cars and backs and whatnot and wander around watering woodchips! That wouldnt be to much fun so pray for rain.

This has been a message from cardboard, please send me donations for taking the time to post.

Actually the woodchip varieties if Psilocybe do not appear until the fall (late SEpt-Oct through Dec-Jan) -and spring and summer rains have nothing to do with their growth and developement for shrooms popping up in the late fall in woodchips. . They will come in the fall. The only thing lacking is rain for lawn shrooms such as the p. stunzii, P. baeocystis, P fimetaria, etc.

Of coourse, sprinkler systems at condos and apartment complexes or office lawns can pop up right now.

i saw a fww blue ringers this morning but did not pick or have my camera with me.

Anyway, that is what is up right now and maybe a few baeocystis.

but more likely in lawns with sprinkler systems. and well manicured lawns with perpetual lawn care service.

Oh i thought all mushrooms grew in the summer, MJ you need to read posts carefully before you make dipshit replies. You dont think cyanscens and other woodlover fruit better after a nice mild wet summer and spring?? Mycelium just doesnt appear, thats why we plant patches in the spring, so the mycelium can properly colonize the growth medium....this is called vegetative mycelial growth, you may have heard about it seeing as you claim to be a so called "mycologist"

I hear ya CB, all the grass is getting very dry down here in Seattle. Earlier this year, I was hearing predictions of a wet summer. So much for that.

Looks like it may be another season of hunting sprinkler systems.

does everything have to be about psilocybes? personally i'd rather stumble upon a patch of chanterelles or other edible delicacies than most anything.
I can vouch for it being too hot and too dry in the lower mainland , BC.
On my last hike , all i found was some reishi, and 1 honey mushroom.
still have to wait for it to get later in the season...

Cardboard,

I have no trouble finding patches of thousands of P. cyanescens every fall whether there is a lot of summer rain or not.

Many places where I pick them have sprinkler systems but I am not going to post my locations in the city for others to go look and rip off. Over the years I have posted many public places where they grow and as for summer rain, I noticed no difference in the appearance of large patches that I am looking for because I always find giant large patches of these shrooms whether it had rained alot in the summer a lot or not. Although more rain might produce morte patches

It is actually the lack of rain in the fall which causes patches to not appear in abundance, or at least an abundant growth of fall shrooms is generally due to a lack of rain in the fall. This is more from perosnal observation
then from someones published data.

BTW, Paul Stamets refers to me in his lectures when out of the country as the man who has picked more than one million mushrooms. And I probably have picked more than that over the past 30 years. I know there habitat and their growth here in the PNW and probably know more than anyone about their growth and development in this region.

And have a shroomy day.

I leave in two days for the other side of the world and I will be collecting specimens and working on the three new species of Psilocybe I discovered in the last three years in Thailand and Cambodia. A paper on their taxonomy, cultivation, Chemical analysis and DNA analysis of the species (actually 18 separate collections of various magic species are being studied by me and my colleagues), several Thai students, My colleague Dr. Prakitsin Sihanonth of Chulalongkorn University and by a Japanese student whoo is conducting the DNA tests.

And again have a shroomy suummer

mj

and by the way, Do you really believe a rain dance is going to come if you dance?

The Indians are still trying to get rain to come when they dance and it usually doesn't happen just because they dance

And a rain dance soesn't do

dAMMIT MJ it doesnt have to be all about you all the time! I am just trying to have some fun in the off season, i know that may be to much for you. I found 3 specimens of psilocybe (stropharia) cubensis last night at my uncles range in kingston, they only fruited because i had been watering them. =) Get worked up MJ

P. strictipes is a mushroom similar to the liberty cap and is not related to P. baeocystis. It grows in pastures not in lawns or muclch.

Singer and Smith erred in their original identification and everyone else who published guides including me erred in showing it as similar to P. baeocystis. See paul Stamets Psilocybin Mushroomss of the World.

This info was recently posted here by me in a thread with pictures of it.

yo astrok...sounds like you need some resources, man...the first step in all this wonderful mushroom hunting should be the buying of a good book...and you can't go wrong with Mushrooms Demystified (well except to the hugeness of the thing that makes it hard to take into the field)...it comes in pocket size too, so that can help solve the problem but that also means it doesn't have as much info...another pocket book on Magic Mushrooms is a good buy as well...

so yieah, a forest is a good place to find mushrooms...but as you read your new book(s) you'll probably get a lot better idea of where to look...

just out of curiousity...where are you hailing from in WA? i humbly peep from skagit county...
