I think I'll go back to college and learn construction
    #17296758 -

By college I mean college, not university, there's a difference in Canada.

I'm doing some renos lately and I've come to realize that I fucking love it!

So I want to take a 1 and a half year class that'll teach me how to do pretty much everything I could have to do on a house, up to code.

Plus it would go hand in hand with my life ambitions.

There is good money, at least in Canada, in construction.
What college? Algonquin?

Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to awake from that dream? How would you know the difference between that dream world and the real world?

I was thinking La Cite Collegiale.

I don't want to do this for a living though. I plan on buying apartments buildings and knowing how to renovate is a crucial part to making profits in that business.

I would say don't do it but if you really want to go for it.  I worked the last 4 months as a deck and screen porch builder and I quit because I hated it so bad.  My hours were being at the job site at 7 am - 5 pm with only 1 break and that was about a 35-hour lunch.  I didn't even get to sit down without being mocked by other workers who were all 30+ (I'm 20).  But yea I just grew to hate it overtime but it is good money and a good workout.  I got very in shape over summer just working.

Apply as an apprentice so you get paid to learn on the job. They will pay  for your school too if it's a good company.

My friend did this as an electrician. He is now a journeyman working for diavek diamond mines up in northern alberta.

What do you do now?

If I could do this I would.  I have done just about everything to my house and relatives houses short of actually building one from scratch.

If this is mainly an investment opportunity I hope you don't have another career, unless you plan to hire a maintenance man for your buildings so you can work your other job when emergencies come up at your buildings.

Physical work, and the feeling of accomplishment after viewing your completed work has done more for my life than any of the quacks I went to for mental help.

I probably soon gon ahave a office job with the government.

I don't want to work in that field, I just want to know what I'm doing when I have small reno projects. Even if it take me 3 times the time to build it than someone else, I just want to know the basic so I can do it myself and save the money.

Plus my stepfather is really great at that stuff, he can give me tips if I get stuck with something.

I worked contruction doing framing, deck building, cedar soffit, window and door finishing before I got into CNC and moldmaking.

I own my own house and have done a kitchen reno, put a door from my hallway to my garage, and plan on new fencing and concrete work next summer.

It's not difficult. If you have common sense and tools you can do minor repairs.

If you want to do major renos... get a contractor and learn from them.
Work experience > schooling

We hired a 4 year apprentice in our mold shop 3 years ago. I only had 1 year shop experience and I had more knowledge and confidence than he did.

The program I'm looking at is pretty good, its very recent (less than 5 years) and most of the "classes" are outside building a house. Every semester they build a house, then the school sell it as a prefab. All built by the students under the supervision of a teacher. All up to code. Everytime I'm on the highway I see the school and there always a house being built on the front lawn.

Well I need to learn how to fix regular everyday things. EX: plumbing. Plumbers are crazy expensive and will charge you full price even if they find the problem in 5 minutes.

I need to learn how to make new division and rebuild part of the building that might be poorly built or rotten. It crucial to have vision in this business and see how you can maximize space in your building. Sometimes, in order to do this, you need to put wall down and build new divisions. Which requires knowledge of electrical, framing, drywall joints, sometimes even plumbing. I need to be able to do this myself or else I won't make money.

Also, My parents to a lot of house flips and I don't want to turn down an opportunity to do one myself because I don't know how. Sometimes awesome deals fall right on your lap and you have to jump on them otherwise somebody else will. I don't plan on letting many opportunities slip through my fingers during my life. I especially don't want to let house flipping opportunities slip due to lack of construction skills to the house up.
